CSS - 'Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above'

CSSOkay, first of all, can we have a moment's silence as a mark of respect for arguably the best song title of the millennium? It's like all those overwrought emo song titles, except it's funny and cheeky and kind of wilfully non-sequitural - which is excellent preparation for the song itself. Shall we move on?

A bit o' background for those not yet up on their world-pop: CSS stands for Cansei De Ser Sexy, which is Portugese for "tired of being sexy". And if you're wondering why they came up with that slightly random name, it's actually taken from a quote from Beyoncé. Reason number one to adore them, if you ask me. Also, they're from Brazil, and their lead singer is called Lovefoxxx. These are all excellent reasons to love a band, but crucially they need the tunes to back it up, do they not? There are far too many rock poseurs flouncing round pretending to be the second coming despite never having released a decent song in their lives as it is, after all.

How lovely, then, that 'Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above' is one of the most catchy songs I've heard in ages. In fact, it's so catchy that I've already become addicted to it, overplayed it, got slightly tired of it, and fallen back in love with it again. It is the song that just won't quit, in other words. It's built around a chirpy, repetitive electronic riff with sassy rapping from Lovefoxxx over the top, and then just when you think you've got the measure of it, it flips into something rather like the lovechild of the guitar solo from 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and the theme tune from Doctor Who.

I still can't make much sense of the lyrics, but frankly that's all sprinkles on the sundae at this point; Lovefoxxx could be chanting satanic rituals in pig-Latin for all I care. Pure, unfiltered, unashamed pop such as this does not need to explain itself.

Okay good song, everything the review says it is. Somehow it works. I'm not talking about the song though, this is going to be another one about rating I'm afraid...

After what Kerri mentioned, another 5 star the next day is just madness. You want to see your most recent ratings all together? They might not all be fives but.. stop being so nice! It's very un-ChartBlog!!

    5, 5, 5, 5, 2, 5, 4, 4, 4, SEE??!

These songs may all deserve their rating in one way or another, I'm not saying underrate songs just to get a nice mix of ratings. I'm saying review some sucky songs already to get a decent balance! It makes CB more interesting to read and is much more likely to stir up discussions..

[Ha! I KNEW running Steve's CSS review today was a good idea! Can't be seen to cave in to pressure, y'see. Don't worry, there will be scathing reviews again. It's just we've had a run of songs that individual ChartBlog reviewers have been very keen on. Having said that, I'm already regretting the four star FFAF review (it's a three, with hindsight), but wish I'd given Amerie five. But I wouldn't change a word of either review. What does that tell you? - Fraser]

    1. So male.

    2. Good 'cos the scathing reviews are the best part!

    3. Oh. sir! SIR! *waves hand wildly in the air*
That we should completely ignore the number of stars and just read the review, listen to the music and rate for ourselves!! Am I right, sir?!

[1. Nah, it's called 'integrity'. Some women have it too.

    2. *sharpens barbed typewriter*

    3. Very good, Kat! Take a gold star...no, wait...TAKE FIVE! (!) !! - Fraser]

youve all gone soft, lost all credabilty and diversity! something needs to change, pronto! when i first started commenting i thought you were harsh, for example giving mcr 3 stars for i dont love you, and linkin park 2 for what iv done. now your defo swinging the other way! Kat hes winding us up, we cant let him win! let me guess, another 5 tomorrow, or are you trying to catch us out and tomorrow will actually be a 1?! well, just a word of warning if it is a 1 then i may suffer from a heart attck from the shock so youll be to blame. hows about a 3 though? atleast sit on the fence for a change, a very welcome change (btw FFAF is rightly a 4, its way better than the '5 star' chillis, even though it lacks the old quality)

[Calm down. All I'm doing is putting up the reviews I've been given by the reviewers, including their ratings, in order of when the CDs are available in the shops. It just so happens that Hazel and Steve have both really loved two different songs in the last couple of weeks, and I've loved one. What's wrong with that? Like I said, if I'd written all of the reviews, the star ratings would have been different, same as if just Hazel did 'em or just Steve, (or if you'd written them, come to that). But what none of us are going to do is change our feelings about a song just because it looks like a pattern has emerged, that would be dishonest. That's why I used the word 'integrity' earlier. And as I said to Kat, it's not the star rating that counts really, it's the reasons given FOR the star rating (ie - the review). If I thought you were just coming to the blog to see the stars, why would I bother with the review bit? You're cleverer than that, surely? - Fraser]

Don't worry Kerri, he's promised scathing reviews. Gonna have to bet when it finally appears it's going to be a song or a band I love though lol.

And Fraser...You're cleverer that that, surely? So uncool! That phrase and other ones like it are a huge part of the reason teenagers get so annoyed at adults! Especially when it's true! It's patronizing and just makes you feel stupid for fussing.

[OK, good point. I'm sorry for patronizing you, Kerri. Kat, thanks for admitting I'm right. Can we let the star-ratings thing go now? It's not the most interesting thing about ChartBlog, to my way of thinking... Fraser]

thanks Fraser for being big enough to apologise. i may get carried away but my brain is the only thing iv got going for me, and thanks Kat for sticking up for me :)
i agree with Kat anyway, its not the fact that theyre all 5 stars as youd be being untruthful to what you think about the songs if you rated them differently, its just seeing 5 stars 4 days in a row was getting a bit repetative. im looking forward to some evil reviews making their way here soon enough, as we seem to agree theyr the most interesting :P and yet again i agree with you Kat, theyr bound to be about decent songs! xx

Lol you can't have them all for yourself fraser! Didn't mommy ever teach you to share?!

[No, but she did teach me how to shave. Which is nearly the same. - Fraser]

Indeed it is! Because shaving is a form of shearing and shearing sounds like sharing in a funny irish (or something) accent!!
