Fall Out Boy - 'I'm Like A Lawyer With The Way I'm Always Trying To Get You Off (Me And You)'

Fall Out BoyThe art of naming a new song is a precarious business. You've got to strike a balance. One the one hand, it can be bad to simply name your song after the most memorable moment in it, especially if that moment contains a fairly common pop expression like 'Crazy', 'I Believe' or 'I Want You'. You run the risk that people think it's a cover before they've even heard it - Gnarls Barkley had something like the 17th hit to be called 'Crazy' since charts began, for example.

On the other hand, people do need to be able to ask for the song in shops after only hearing it on the radio, so giving it a deliberately obtuse title can backfire too. So you've a song about sitting on a park bench holding hands with your total love-honey smoochpal on a groovy day, and so that you don't lose credibility with your cynical teen fans (who possibly don't have smoochpals yet), you call it something dramatic, like 'Suicidal Planet Melt', or 'When Skeletons Bleed (Tears Of Pain)'.

Panic! At The Disco deserve an honourable mention at this point, because their song titles are often irrelevant one-liners, designed to encapsulate the essense of the song, but not pander to casual fans who aren't prepared to do their homework. It's either that or there are some sentences that even Brandon Panic! can't cram into a melody in an awkward fashion.

Being competitive sorts, Fall Out Boy's latest sort of takes that trend on to a new level. An incredibly long sentence, which should be a joke (and if it IS a joke, should be a funny one), but which doesn't make any sense if you put the actual song title next to it in brackets.

Look at it, it's a mess! So, Pete, you're like a lawyer with the way you're always trying to get me off you and me? There's two Petes in your little scenario, is there? And the one on top of us is too heavy? And this is something a lawyer would normally help with? Is that what you're saying? I thought you were sposed to be the articulate one.

Bah!

PS: Don't moan about not mentioning the song more. It's not my fault the title is weird. Decent stadium ballad though. Would've got more stars but for the silly drama of the verse lyrics next to the soppy wetness of the chorus ones. Feels patchworky, see...

Sorry? What was it called again? I dozed off half way through the title.

    Oh.

But that makes no sense. So it's not just poor grammar. But, a bonus point for at least trying Her Majestys English instead of that godawful text speak.

What was it - 'Thnks fr th Mmrs' maybe? Was it summat to do with breasts? And who is the singer anyway? I take it Pete is the one who does interweb prawn. But who is the fat one? And how much does he hate the nekkid one. And which one is Big Pete and which is little Pete? This is what we need to know.

    Record's a bit mince, though.

That title broke my brain. They're going to need much bigger CD cases at this rate.

"Me And You" is the alternate title. Yeah, that makes sense. Maybe.

TBQH I dislike the song and title, I'm a HUGE FoB fan but I HATE this song, now the teenies will latch on it and be all "dude P3t3 W3nc3 wrote that 'bout meh!" ¬___¬ now we have to put up with there crap. THough the video is amazing, I watched the new video for this single and CRIED, the video has an amazing message behind it. It has the most amazing concept ever, the song really sorta rings that out.

They should have relased "Bang The Doldrums" or "You're Crashing But You Are No Wave."

Im a big FOB fan as well and I found the song a bit cheesy at first but it has grown on me, the message behind the video is great as well. Just hope people arent gonna slate them for appearing to jump on the "charity" bandwagon, its a really good cause

I love this song - not a fan of the chorus though. I just think it has some really cool lyrics in it. Like:

Sour Bottled Baby Girl With Eyes The Size of Baby Worlds

    and

We're The New Face of Failure - Prettier and Younger but Not Any Better Off

    Bullet Proof Lonliness(sp?)

    I think it's wicked :P

Lol. Very funny. I asked my friend (who loves pete btw) if she had heard the new fall out boy single that was coming out and she was like 'no, whats it called?' and i had to say like the whole title and she looked really confused. Then, she wanted to remember it so she could listen on youtube and had to write the song title down on a bit of paper so she wouldn't forget. A disadvantage of long song titles.

    I really dislike this song
One of the worst off the album
(which isn't their best album either..)
Sounds like some kind of westlife song
"Me and you, setting on our honeymoon, if I woke up next to you"
Can FOB go back to their original style, like in Take This To Your Grave, From Under The Cork Tree.. Even My Heart Will Always Be..(ect)
    Please?
Fob have always had a thing for long song titles though lol
    I think they're longest being:
"Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Dying (Do Your Part To Save The Scene And Stop Going To Shows)"
    What a song..
(8)This has been said so many times that I'm not sure if it MATTERS! (8)
Aww I miss how they used to be..
I really don't like their new style at all :(

i actually quite like this song. . .

sophomore slump or comeback king (i think that's what it's called) off their 1st album is blatently their best one though

also, whats the fuss about pete wentz? i prefer patrick stump . . .

I'm going to have to agree with Ellie here..
    Patrick Stump(h) = amazing voice
    Pete Wentz = Overrated
Just cos he can jump around while playing a bass :S
And why don't Andy and Joe ever get any attention
Without them, there would be no Fall Out Boy at all :(

Well, I figure that Me And You is the alternative title, so nothing to do with a double Pete...

Still, the title may be really really long, but it's still quite a good song (I'm a great fan of FOB!!), maybe not the best, but still...we should be used to some pretty long song titles from FOB by now, I mean, some of the earlier song titles weren't exactly short, were they? So...why complain about the title? As long as the song is good...

Fraser, have you noticed how most of the people that have commented on this are girls? And not one has said 'OMG pete wentz is like, soooo hott! I am like totally gonna marry him and everything one day!' in fact a few have agreed they prefer patrick...yay! maybe people are finally realising what pete is like...hallelujah!

Not actually heard this song by FoB.

But I agree with some of the previous comments, what has happened to them?!

I absolutely love there earlier songs, I still love their songs now.. But there sooo commercialised. I loved them when none of my friends knew who they were.

Their long song titles are ace! (Y)

And Joe is hott, and so is Pete, but thats just common knowledge.

"sophomore slump or comeback king (i think that's what it's called) off their 1st album is blatently their best one though"

sorry to correct you, but it's 'sophmore slump or comeback of the year', and it's off the album From Under The Cork Tree, which is acc their 4th album (if you count My Heart Will Always Be The B-side To My Tongue as an album)

Sorry but it annoys me when people think Infinity On High and Cork Tree are their only albums...

bleh 3rd time I've posted on here, I seem like some kind of FOB geek :P

    right.
Who the hell are you to judge a song based on its title?
'Me and You' is the alternate title just for pathetic people like you who dont even talk about the song apart from one half of a sentence at the end.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, of course, but just because the title is too long for you to handle does that mean the songs bad?
I love the song and the title is [at last] something different and creative.
Listen to the song and the amazing lyrics. Not judge the song on its longer title.
