Chart Report - The Biggest Songs of 2007

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 20:21 UK time, Sunday, 30 December 2007

1 - Leona Lewis - 'Bleeding Love'

Leona LewisWhat We Said Then: "I'm grading on a curve here and it's infinitely better than the sort of drivel that The X Factor usually inflicts on us. In fact, why not go and have a listen to the embarrassingly bad new Shayne Ward single, and then listen to this, and just try telling me that this isn't in a different league entirely." (SP)

What We Say Now: Leona's success provoked some of the most heated and barbed ChartBlog comments of the entire year, but you can't deny a song this memorable. It's not the favourite song of anyone who contributes to the blog, but there's no sense of a horrendous miscarriage of justice in this being No.1. That's coming later! (FM)

2 - Rihanna - 'Umbrella'

RihannaWhat We Said Then: "You can call me a big sap if you like, but there's something very cute and endearing about the us-against-the-world sentiment of "you can stand under my umbrella". (SP)

What We Say Now: You can still call him a big sap if you like, he even included it in his review of the year. (FM)

=======================

3 - Mika - 'Grace Kelly'

Mika - Grace KellyWhat We Said Then: "This is simply THE victory march song of the moment really, isn’t it? With bright vocals as wide in range as a Dulux catalogue, and a build of camp "mm" and "ah" flounces, with a larger than life, bouncy chorus which goes up REALLYREALLY high, you can understand why." (SW)

What We Say Now: Mika remains musical Marmite. The people who don't like him aren't going to change their minds, neither are his fans. I still think a song listing all the things you could be, like you're trying out personalities in some sort of musical changing room, is mirror-kissing of the highest order. Hopefully he'll settle down and ACTUALLY be something (other than annoying) next year. (FM)

=======================

4 - Leon Jackson- 'When You Believe'

Leon JacksonWhat We Said Then: "The song doesn't really translate well into a solo performance rather than a duet, and Leon's take on it is lacklustre to say the least. It sounds as though he's just clocked into the studio to get the job done, and is focusing on hitting his marks rather than putting any passion into the performance. Essentially, he's a one-man Westlife." (SP)

What We Say Now: I don't really care if Rhydian should've won, or if Leon's inexperience works for him or against him. I don't think he does a very good job of this song, but then it's not a very good song in the first place. So, for now, a nil-nil draw... (FM)

=======================

5 - Take That - 'Rule The World'

Take ThatWhat We Said Then: We're all suckers for the idea that our lives are in some way governed by universal forces which we cannot control or see. So what Gary is actually singing is closer to "you can't go anyway. I've asked, and He says we're supposed to be together forever, or the future of the entire human race is at stake. Is that what you want on your conscience? Is it? Right, so put the bag down and come give me a cuddle". (FM)

What We Say Now: Some people didn't get that we liked this song then, and we like it now. 'Shine' was a bigger pop moment, but this is bigger in every other sense. Desperately big, really. (FM)
