Chart Report - 10/02/08
1 - Basshunter - 'Now You're Gone'
ChartSnipe: Still no perch-off-knocking happening, I notice. Not to the No.1 slot, the No.2 slot OR the No.3 slot. No.4 is Rihanna coming UP the charts, even after being around for ages, and No.5 is David Jordan, who gets points for trying, and will probably go even higher next week. But still...where are all the unstoppable songs? We're already one twelfth of the way through 2008 and the charts still haven't recovered from the New Year yet. Someone release a novelty song about tweezers, quickly! (FM)

2 - Nickelback - 'Rock Star'
ChartSnipe: Proof, if proof were needed, that all you need to do to inject a bit of interest into your flagging moose-rock career (it's all in the bellowing, see) is to unveil a hitherto hidden sense of humour. Of course, once the door to smiley pastures is opened, it's hard to fully shut it again. Give it a couple of years and they'll be doing over-earnest, mooey versions of Weird Al Yankovic's greatest hits. What fun! (FM)

3 - Adele - 'Chasing Pavements'
ChartSnipe: The trick with chasing pavements is not to get put off or confused by a fork in the road, or a sudden dead end. Experienced pavement chasers will tell you these things are an occupational hazard, one that everyone has to learn how to deal with. That thing about stepping on a crack is true though, so watch out! 4 - Rihanna - 'Don't Stop The Music'
ChartSnipe: Should you ever find yourself in the awful position of becoming bored with this song, why not do as I do, and re-imagine the title, using the medium of puns. So far, I've managed to entertain myself with 'Don't Stop Them You Seek' - the sort of advice you'd get from a guru with a very poor grasp of the English language - and 'Don't Stop, The Emu's Sick'. There's also the similar but different 'Don't Stop The Emu Sick', which is gross, but kind of lively if you're really, really bored. (FM)

5 - David Jordan - 'Sun Goes Down'
ChartSnipe: Having had a chance to chat to David last week, I can exclusively reveal that this song was written as a trojan horse to get him into the charts, and therefore in everyone's faces. Well, it's certainly done THAT, but if the rest of his songs are just dreary, by-the-numbers pop, there will be TROUBLE... (FM)

regarding comments against number 1, the majors are desperately trying to reduce costs to balance their dwindling revenues by keeping their top artists in the charts for as long as possible - they cant afford to develop & promote other artists - there are plenty out there with good songs but they dont get plugged or even released - this is a great opportunity for the (true) indies if they can break the radio playlist fiasco (radio 1 excepted of course!)
