Back Of The Sofa - Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Fraser McAlpine | 13:59 UK time, Tuesday, 22 April 2008

A SofaNever mind that Dan is wearing a television throughout this video, or that Mr Le Sac has angel wings, or that there is cleavage on display, but not the kind that Nuts readers would enjoy...the key thing about this video is that Scroob wears his watch with the face pointing out from his inner wrist. Freaky, huh?

How you wear your wrist-watch is to be one of those great dividers which people never really talk about. Some people wear their watches facing outwards, and others wear theirs facing inwards. But it's very rare for an outy person to switch over and become an inny, or vice versa.

Both sides claim they do it because it feels more natural and comfortable that way, and yet, it's a wrist-watch, it's not something which is hard-wired into our DNA, they've only been in widespread use for about 100 years. And it doesn't seem to be a split which takes into account left or right-handedness either.

And there's more. What with mobile phones and stuff, people are wearing watches less and less these days, which seems a shame, as they can really add something to a forearm. That said, the writers of the world's spam emails seem to still think that the one thing we all want after we've had parts of ourselves made longer is a new watch. Maybe even a fake Rolex!

Lord knows why the next thing they think we would want after groinal surgery is a flashy timepiece. Maybe they think that everyone who gets these spam mails will see the watch and immediately realise that you, the owner, must have either already had it done, or never needed it doing in the first place.

And maybe if you're wearing the watch on your inner wrist, that's a way of saying you don't really want to brag...but you could if you needed to. A point the PipSac must be trying to make on a very subtle level.

Just as well the song is good too, or we might not have had the chance to really think about the issue like this, right?

    Hi

I don't wear a watch much nowadays, but I usually wore it facing out.

But really, if you wear it facing in isn't there less chance of scraping and scratching it against something, and less chance of it being tanglefungled when you are putting a shirt on?

And maybe it's slightly more difficult to steal if it's the other way round?

Or maybe that's just how angels are.

Well, I take your point re: tanglefungling, but then there's getting the heel of your hand caught on the winding mechanism, so it's swings and roundabouts.

I'd have said having the clasp facing outwards would make it easier to steal too.

Yes thinking about it I guess it would, will have to get Derren Brown or someone for an expert opinion on that one.

Of course it would be terrible to get the clasp caught in your wings when you were putting a sweater on, if you wear a sweater when you have wings and if you do do they have suitable holes at the back?

It really is quite a tricky subject. And when you throw the choice between digital and analogue into the equation it must get ferociously complex. Which is probably why we modern fast-food-instant-gratification-ready-made-custard type people don't bother wearing one.

But look... the angel personage is actually wearing TWO watches, one on each wrist. One is facing in, one facing out!

That starts to look like he really is trying to make a statement - a statement of confusion, but there we are... or maybe he's operating on two kinds of time : angel time and human time...

I wonder what Angel Time is like? Sounds like it could be nice but if it's anything like Hammer Time then count me out.

Perhaps the whole video is a kind of Wings of Desire style statement where the angel is confused about whether he wants to be an angel or wants to be human, and the watches facing opposite directions symbolise this...

And of course the song is about conflicting emotions as well.

And also, it's interesting to me that I didn't notice the other watch, even when I was thinking about watches. As a confirmed outy, I presumably have some mental filter which only spots watches when they're put on wrong (to my way of thinking).
