The Wing Thing
If you haven't been listening to Scott Mills over the past few weeks, you might not understand what this next bit is about. And explaining it properly may be beyond the wit of mortal man. Course, that doesn't mean I won't give it a go...
Scott has adopted a singer from New Zealand called Wing. Her speciality is strangulated versions of classic songs, in a piercing, high-pitched voice. Because Wing has been such a large part of his show recently, Scott paid for her to be flown over, and arranged a special, intimate performance in the Introducing tent.
(I may be able to put some video of this up over the next couple of days, so bear with me.)
In the meantime, what you need to know about it is that it could so easily have been really wrong. Wing herself is a middle-aged lady of Asian descent who doesn't seem to be fully aware that she is being laughed at. So getting her in front of an howling audience of sun-burned Radio 1 fans - lovely as you all are - could be seen to be a little cruel.
Of course, in practise, she was poised, humble, and very keen to thank Radio 1 and Scott for the chance to come over and sing. And in return the crowd were enthusiastic and supportive. She sang, they sang along. She stopped singing, they chanted "we love you Wi-ing, we do" in exactly the same way that anyone would do if she was the best singer in the world.
And in the end, it became impossible to tell if she was being mocked or celebrated, and it just became about a singer performing to a rabid audience, who loved what she was doing. In an odd sort of way, it was among the most touching moments of the weekend, even though Scott and Kelly Osbourne were pretending to ballroom dance behind her.
Kelly was later spotted in the Headspace tent, snogging the face off someone. And her brief visit to the stage there was interrupted by the arrival of a dancing man. So the feeling of love and support is clearly contagious.
Which makes this collection of very limp gossip look all the more rubbish, frankly. I only hope you, the Radio 1 massive, can show it a fraction of the kindness Wing received.

Fresh from their tent-bursting set on the In New Music We Trust stage, Black Kids settled down for a nice Thai red curry. Yes, in THIS sunshine. Keyboard player Dawn very nearly spilled hers down her nice top, but tipped the plate back just in time.
Westwood, while running through the acts on today's bill, called the Kooks the Cooks. Yes, two 'o's. He's a scamp, innee?
Matt Pigeon Detective was spotted under a cheap gazebo in the guest area, being interviewed by Greg James.
The Kooks really do wear those hats all the time. Which in this weather is actually very sensible.
Fearne and Reggie spent a portion of Madonna's set yesterday discussing whether she really was playing her guitar or not.
On that note, I'm off to get an ice-cream. There will be more soon! Oh look! Here it is!
