P!nk - 'So What'
These are tough times for rocksnobs, I tell you. Still reeling from the horror of seeing celebrities - celebrities with No Proper Rock Credentials, no less - wearing Led Zeppelin and Ramones T-shirts as if they had paid their dues or something, they have then had to try and re-stock their froth glands in order to get a decent amount together to protest about boybands with guitars. Then there's the whole "Is Pop-Punk Still Punk?" debate, and the emo thing, and the fact that My Chemical Romance sell more records than [insert more credible band here] do...the poor souls have a lot to get frustrated about, and this record here isn't going to help matters one little bit.

Let's examine the evidence, shall we? Here's a song in which internationally famous pop singer P!nk does two things which rocksnobs mistakenly believe are the sole property of rock musicians.
THING 1: Employing a proper 'I Couldn't Give A Stuffing Stuff What You Think About Me' attitude.
THING 2: Singing real emotions about real things that give the listener a real insight into the singer's real feelings about real stuff.
And the way she does this is by singing about the breakup of her marriage in a funny, defiant, and ultimately self-empowering sort of way, one which encompasses her achievements and her flaws, and one which demands that you think about what she's saying, because some of this stuff isn't entirely serious, even though it is heartfelt.
And yet, it's not as if she has suddenly gone metal, or folk, or roped in Seasick Steve for a blues duet. This is clearly still pop music. It's just pop music which has strutted over to hairy old rock music, whacked it in the knackers and made off with its backbone.
Seriously, try levelling at P!nk the usual rocksnob nonsense about things being manufactured or weak or frivolous or aimed at little girls and see how far you get...dispute her self-appointed Rock Star status and see if you make it out of the argument with your face on.
