Eine Kleine Frankmusik

FrankmusikBoys, girls, gather round!

This gentleman here is going to be quite famous in the '09. He's called Vincent Frank, although as a performer he goes by the name Frankmusik, and he's officially A Good Thing.

What we're talking about here is a little bit of disco-house type stuff, a little bit of slinky dancing-about type stuff, and a huge amount of giddy pop music type stuff (plus he's an amazing beat-boxer).

Now, apart from his musical endeavours, which we'll get to in due course, the interesting thing about Frankmusik is that his album title is 'Complete Me', which is a kind of needy title, suggesting some dark inner thoughts, and maybe even a craving for validation.

This is the kind of thing proper rock interviewers salivate over, because it means they can turn a cosy promotional chat into a therapy session with a famous person.

Naturally, ChartBlog is above such behaviour, as this EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, IN WHICH HE EXPOSES HIS INNER DEMONS will demonstrate.

===================================

How're you doing today?
Frankmusik: Well, the two hours I've been awake for have been pretty intense. I've got a major hangover.

Have you been out celebrating the completion of the new album and the excitement of the year ahead?
Frankmusik: Yeah, I've got to say I did just kind of let my hair down a little bit last night because we worked out all the tracks that are going on the album, which is kind of cool.

But I've got the album sampler here... and it's not even finished yet?
Frankmusik: No, and you're actually getting another sampler next week.

Wow! I feel special. So when you send out a sampler called 'Complete Me' and it's not finished... are we supposed to put our own songs on the end?
Frankmusik: Well, you can do it you want! It'll be a sort of interlude.

That'd be good actually, I wonder what sort of music I'd put on the end!
Frankmusik: Bit of 2-Step, a bit of a Ragga, mix it up a bit. Dub Step...

And complete it with a bit of a George Formby medley.
Frankmusik: Super!

So, Mister Vincent Frank: two Christian names! Well done.
Frankmusik: I know. It makes me sound more important.

Like Ben Elton or Hugh Laurie. Do you wish your surname really was 'Musik'?
Frankmusik: Ooh, I don't know actually. I think it would be a bit of an overkill. I'd prefer just to be Vincent Frank.

Okay. But do people expect you just to be 'frank' with them? Do they give you that kind of attribute?
Frankmusik: Well, I'm quite quiet when I talk to people. I think they take that to mean I'm quite thoughtful and all that, when I'm just not really interested in talking to them. Frank though? I'm not very frank. I never have to be.

So you've never used the expression "allow me to be frank"?
Frankmusik: I avoid it like the plague.

I bet, especially after Westlife came out with that album: 'Allow Us To Be Frank'.
Frankmusik: Yeah. It was kind of a bit like that when we were on tour with Keane, it was like avoiding saying "ah, I'm not too Keane on that".

They must get that all the time. They're like "that's hilarious wordplay, well done everyone."
Frankmusik: Yeah, "we've never heard that one before, never saw that one coming."

Right, well on that note, you'll be pleased to know then that this entire interview is based around idiotic wordplay.
Frankmusik: Brilliant!

So, I'm looking at your album (well, the sampler), 'Complete Me', and I'm taking that as an instruction. What is it you want me to do to complete you?
Frankmusik: What you'd need to do is buy me the best mountain bike the world. Actually, 'Complete Me', you can read a few different ways. It's like, 'completely me', so I'm giving you my heart and soul in my album, or it's kind we're talking about now.

The album cover that we're got here isn't a picture of you...
Frankmusik: That WILL change!

That definitely will be you? I'm seeing Jazz hands: "It's completely me!!" Now, I'm going to go through some key areas in your life where you feel you may need completing.
Frankmusik: Right...

Physically, is there anything we can do to complete you?
Frankmusik: Yeah, give me longer fingers. I've got the tiniest fingers in the whole world. And you know what they say about a man with small fingers...

Yes, can't play the piano.
Frankmusik: Yep, not good pianists. And I'm too short. I'm 5ft 8" and I want to be a good 6ft.

Although 5ft 8" is a good pop star height.
Frankmusik: Yeah... we fit better in planes.

Emotionally, what can we do to complete you?
Frankmusik: Well, I'm always too busy trying to rely on other people's emotional stability, so I need to just chill out a bit and stop thinking so much about random nothingness.

So we need some sort of isolation tank? A massage?
Frankmusik: Ooh, a good back rub.

Intellectually?
Frankmusik: I wish I knew more Oscar Wilde quotes. That'd be good.

Which can you remember?
Frankmusik: "Fashion is such a hideous and lisidious thing that it has to change itself every six months."

Spiritually?
Frankmusik: Ooooh. The simplest questions are always the hardest to answer. I would... like to know if there's a God or not. That would complete me spiritually.

So how close to completion do you think you are?
Frankmusik: Well, considering we've only just chosen the album yesterday evening, we're in good shape, the thing is we have too many songs to choose from. They're pretty much all done, but [...] you've got my A&R guy sat at the back of the room, and he's doing that kind of face where his eyes squint, his mouth curls up on the right and you can just tell, he doesn't like it.

Either that or he's eaten something he doesn't enjoy. Are you confident enough in your music making abilities to say, "hey, even if you don't like it, I'm right, I'm the artist!"
Frankmusik: I have a well balanced argumentative [relationship] with him. I don't ever go overboard. But yeah, I do sometimes have to lay the rules.

Do these arguments ever take place in a sort of beat-box championship?
Frankmusik: No, because he'd definitely lose.

Well, yeah, I read you're a proper beatboxer and everything.
(he beatboxes . We're aware that this is less impressive written down, but it was really good...)

Well, thanks for talking (and beatboxing) to us, we look forward to hearing the rest of the album!.
Frankmusik: Bye!

    :O!

    They've just deleted my comment!

    I'll rewrite...

I like the song, I think it'll be a great summer anthem. But, he does come across as a bit of a 'doorknob' in this interview!

Also, is he German - Musik - ? Or is it that he's just too kool.

    Hope this one is suitable!

  • Comment number 5.

Haha, I think I might have a little idea of why your previous comment got removed...

I transcribed this interview, so it might be my fault if he doesn't come across that well. He actually seemed to really relax into it... I mean, Fraser got him to BEATBOX at the end! I guess that's essentially the problem with typing up what someone said, you really can't say how they said it.

  • Comment number 6.

Yeah, I guess...I'm sure we'll see much more of him on TV over the next few months and I'll form a proper opinion then.

    Still though, good tune!

  • Comment number 7.

    WITH the right promotion........

BETTER OFF AS 2 WILL BE A TOP 20 HIT !!!!

  • Comment number 8.

    FRASER its all your fault.

I cycled five miles today in the sun... and i was listening to FRANKMUSIK all the way !!!!
