Take That - 'Said It All'

Post categories:

Vicki Vicki | 10:39 UK time, Friday, 12 June 2009

Take ThatI've been inspired by this song's title to tell a bit of a truth. OK, a lot of a truth. So much truth that your mind could quite possibly implode upon reading. Maybe. Ready? Here goes: I've never really liked Take That.

Woah, wait! Before you judge me, you must realise that when I was growing up it was Take That or The Backstreet Boys, and for me and my friends it was Backstreet every time. Why, we would ponder, would we want to be obsessing over those leather-wearing, diamond-encrusted, groin-thrusting types, when we could learn BSB's dance moves in the playground, and fixate over the oh-so-dreamy Nick Carter to the point of obsession?

(His favourite colour was green, his favourite food was pizza and he was dating, but not steadily. OK, now you can judge me.)

(. Bunch of clowns...)

But then, the Backstreet Boys split up, and Take That burst back onto the scene with, thankfully, a whole lot less leather and a couple of fantastic, dangbanging popsongs (see: 'Rule the World' and 'Greatest Day'). Suddenly, I found myself reconsidering my stance on the band and inevitably was very intrigued as to their latest offering.

The song starts off lovely enough; the gentle piano refrain is really rather beautiful, and Barlow displays a wonderful sense of control on his vocals as he does that whole low-to-high pitch thing. Then there's the slow, thoughtful pace and, video-wise, once you get over the fact that it essentially features four fully grown men dressed as clowns, the whole thing is actually rather artistic in a poignant way, enhancing the song by giving it a sense of tragic motion.

So, all these positives should make one big, fat positive and a five star review, right?

Well, no. You see, 'Said It All' is basically 'Greatest Day' (esp. from 3:09 in), but blander, less grand, less uplifting and less, well, good.

It's nice that Take That have taken a more mature approach with their return, but come on guys! Just because 'Shine' was used on an advert targeting the over forties, doesn't mean all your songs from now on have to do the same. The song feels like it's trying to do something, that it's trying to go somewhere, but even the attempt at a build up towards the end fails because the song as a whole is more suited to, well, the background. I probably wouldn't really notice it existed if I hadn't been asked to review it.

Also, despite the band's best efforts, I have trouble taking this song seriously (and that's nothing to do with the clown thing, promise). You see, 'Said It All' is all about The Gary Bar-show. Yes, we get that he's the most talented one, but with him featuring on lead vocals for the entire song - including the chorus and with the exception of a tiny bit at the end where Mark gets a go - isn't it just a little bit embarrassing for the rest of the band who do little else but 'ooh' and 'ahh'? Again? Maybe that's why they all look so sad the video.

The all-new Take That are capable of more than this Grandma fodder. I never thought I'd hear myself saying it, but suddenly I find myself longing for the days of fringed-TT-leather jackets. And that's not just because my Nick Carter facts would at least still be valid, honest.

Speaking of which, did you know he was offered a part on Disney Channel's The Mickey Mouse Club, but he turned it down to join the Backstreet Boys?

As a fellow BSB fanatic of the past, weren't Take That gone by the time BSB were big news? I was a fan of BSB from 1995, but they didn't really start getting real chart success until after 1996 when take that split up.... so therefore you can't really compare them because they never competed in charts at the same time

I loved Take that too, and liked the comeback album, but not so keen on this album really. no comment on this song as i've not heard it...

And Bah! Kevin was clearly always the best backstreet boy, closely followed by AJ..

    :-)

  • Comment number 2.

Yeah, you are basically right. There was only a tiny bit of crossover I think, but you see, even when TT split up it didn't stop the next few years being dominated by them! (NOTE: I am from a very small town, so maybe this only was the case in my school...)

And it was around that time when everyone was still obsessed with Take That that BSB came out and everyone was like "oooh, which one do you like now?"

And this was when I first really discovered pop music, so it kind of felt like I had to choose between them. Does that make sense? Probably not.

Anyway, we are not even addressing the real issue here: I can't believe you used to like Kevin. My brain cannot compute this.

  • Comment number 3.

Oh Vicki.... good review.... and you have inspired me to write my ten fave Take That singles in no particular order... but I must stress that Patience is a classic song, and was an excellent choice for their comeback !

    Here goes...

    1)Patience
    2)Pray
    3)Greatest day
    4)Rule the world
    5)Could it be magic ?
    6)It only takes a minute
    7)Never forget
    8)Back for good
    9)Everything changes
    10)Love ain't here anymore

These are my ten faves... Said it all is pleasant but it is not in the same league of the ones above..

  • Comment number 4.

Hey Vicki, do you think Take That are going to become like the Pussycat Dolls: "Take That ft. Gary Barlow"...

Yeah, anyway, I think you're a bit harsh on this song. Yeah, it's not greatest day, but the beginning is lovely and there's this thing in the background all the way through that really reminds me of Sia's Breathe Me. Not very original though, and I like my Take That all big and poofy and extravagant:

    1. Shine
    2. Patience (mostly because it brings back memories and the bit that goes "cos the scars run so deep, it's been hard but I have to believe)
    3. Rule the World
    4. Greatest Day
    5. Up all night

    xx

  • Comment number 5.

    Hey Curtains and Jax.....

Here comes the next electro duo ready to rock our worlds ....

    Poofy and Extravagant !

Step aside Soft Cell and the Pet Shop Boys.......

Poofy and Extravagant are set to make it big !

  • Comment number 6.

    I think you forgot "big".

    How could ANYONE forget Big?

  • Comment number 7.

Sorry, Fluffy, but didn't Big leave Big ,Poofy and Exravagant back in Summer 2006 for a solo career ?
I remember his first single "Big is Beautiful " in 2007, that radio 1 refused to play because of the risque lyrics and the video was banned because of that scene with the hot air balloon.
The single failed to chart !
He had a reality show for a short time on MTV called "BIG and proud " but that was shelved after only two shows !
Last I heard , Big was living with a radio 1 employee who does a chart blog, somewhere in Kent , and Big is earning money cleaning this guys moat and doing his laundry !
How the mighty have fallen !

  • Comment number 8.

Haha! Possibly the most surreal conversation I've ever read...

Fluffy - you're SO right! Although perhaps 'Gary Barlow feat. Take That' would be more accurate?!

I agree that the beginning is lovely but isn't it just a watered down version of Coldplay's 'Clocks'? If watering down Coldplay anymore is possible, that is... ;)

  • Comment number 9.

As a BSB fan you should know that they never actually did break up they just went from 5 to 4, why would they call an album Chapter one, god it's annoying when peeps say they've broken up, they just went solo for a bit like fergie and the Black eyed peas etc etc.

    Anyways lol..

Take that are excellent tho, Gary Barlow is a lyrical Genius!!

  • Comment number 10.

No, you're right! I know they didn't - that was actually a typo, but good spot. I'm excited how many BSB fans there are! Well, okay, so far on the comments there are three of us... but I'd say that's a pretty good ratio.

  • Comment number 11.

Hello Vicki... I am now counting 4 !

    1) I want it that way
    2) As long as you love me
    3)The call
    4) Larger than life
5)Quit playing games with my heart.
    6) Backstreet's back
    7) All I have to give.

    My seven faves.

All brilliant pop singles, great melodies and huge commercial appeal !

  • Comment number 12.

Poofy and Extravagant Penetrate the Cosmos!

On Tour 2009 in a pink lined stadium near you!

Backed by Stroppy Queen Fest, the new all guy answer to the Pussycat Dolls!

Rider Request 2.4 - Poofy and Extravagant will not be sitting at any point during the concert in order to reduce creasage to their pantaloons. And also because they can't sit down at the moment. Groupies!

Rider Request 2.5 - No Concert shall begin or practice commence during Hollyoaks.

  • Comment number 14.

A top five'll do for me:

    1) Greatest Day
    2) Patience
    3) Back For Good
    4) Never Forget
    5) Babe

But come one now, let's not get carried away here. You people banging on about the Backstreet Boys need to get your game right. If you're going to talk about modern American boybands, the conversation begins and ends with New Kids On The Block.

  • Comment number 15.

Yeah Vicki, you got your childhood wrong!

  • Comment number 16.

Wow... New kids on the block !

Spirit quiz question , number 443.

Q- In which film is Bruce Willis shot by a member of New kids on the block ?

  • Comment number 17.

Now now. Nobody's saying she got her childhood wrong, Fraser. Just... poorly timed.

I saw a programme on TV the other night about boy bands, and whilst talking about how the modern era of them began with NKOTB (thank you), they played a couple of clips in the background. Now, I'm down enough to already have mp3s of Hangin' Tough, The Right Stuff, and Cover Girl, but I had totally forgotten about Tonight and Step By Step. They'll be getting downloaded in short order. Tunes all of them.

  • Comment number 18.

    Curtains !

Now I gotta do a NKOTB top 5....

    OK... here goes..
    1) You got it ( The right stuff )
    2)Cover girl
    3) Hangin tough
    4)Tonight
    5)Step by step

I also liked Didn't I blow your mind ?....... but I think that was a cover......

Where we going next.... N-sync ?

  • Comment number 19.

Well, I suppose we'll just see what happens when it goes to number 1, eh?

As for it being another 'Greatest Day' - errrrm!

  • Comment number 20.

You mean when it goes to No.1 it'll become musically better? That's a novel marketing ploy...

  • Comment number 21.

Don't wish to disappoint any Take That fans out there.. but Said it all will not be going to NUMBER 1 !

Sorry... there are loads of reasons for this..

    1) The download has failed to make the top 30 after 2 weeks... the c.d is physically released today.. which will propel it into the chart next Sunday , but not at number 1.

    2) The album " The Circus " has sold 2 million copies, and as "Said it all " is on there, most of their fans already have it .

3)Pixie Lott was a new entry at Number one, and is getting blanket t.v and radio coverage and will be very, very strong again.

As will David Guetta and Kelly Rowland which gets a physical release today.

    4) As for the merits of the Take That song, it's good but not Take That super great... Vicki's review is close in essence to it's commercial worth....

Now Greatest Day sounded like a Number one as soon as I heard it.....

  • Comment number 22.

Meaning more of a 'when it gets to number one we'll see how some reviewers don't know what they're talking about'

    Thank you very much.

  • Comment number 23.

    Oh. I get you...

Except that doesn't make any sense.

A review - particularly a review on a something as personal as a blog - is a statement of opinion. Even if everyone on Earth liked that song and Vicki didn't, it wouldn't make her wrong.

As far as her taste in music, Vicki knows exactly what she's talking about.

  • Comment number 24.

"As far as her taste in music GOES, Vicki knows exactly what she's talking about."

    Sorry, missed a word there...

  • Comment number 25.

I got bored listening to this song and wished I was listening to Greatest day. You're completely right Vicki, its rubbish. I think they just needed another ballardy inspiration track to fill the album and this fitted the bill. How it made it to release, I have no idea.

It wont make number 1 and hopefully it wont even make the top 5.

(Btw anybody else completely surprised by that Mama Do song being number 1? Ive been living in a university bubble for a few weeks but I had no idea it was gonna be that big. Mainly because its completely average..)

  • Comment number 26.

Hi Liam.. hope your studies are going well... and I hope you enjoy your travelling, wherever you are going ?
    Keep safe.
Regarding Pixie Lott , she has had a management and record deal since she was 14, and her mentors have been biding their time for the right moment to propel her into the limelight with the right product.
I had heard whispers of her potential for the last 6 months.. but didn't know when she would fully emerge.
Back on the Little Boots blog, comment 10 when we were discussing the amount of female singers, and I mentioned Pixie as being on the radar for greatness.
The single has been expertly marketed and promoted and even before release was near the top of every radio and t.v airplay chart !
Is it any good ?, Well it has huge commercial appeal, loads of hooks , she looks great, and she can certainly sing, all the factors are there, I suppose it is up to personal taste whether people like it or not. It does have a killer chorus, which always helps...
(Jax likes to watch the video with the sound off ! Each to their own.... )

Pixie will release a new single in August and her debut album "Turn it up " is out in September.

  • Comment number 27.

MUCH better with the sound off. She is stunning. Just thing the songs a bit poo. Ah well. Potential here. I just think its such a saturated market.

Studies all over, travelling for a month as of Thursday, so will be back for good end of July. Cheers for the well wishes.

  • Comment number 28.

    Have an absolutely brilliant time......

  • Comment number 29.

In the spirit of the continuing ChartBlog Take That amnesty, I was a HUGE Take That fan when I was at school, and then they broke up and I moved on, and then a couple of years later I was at university and someone put their Greatest Hits on, and after about four or five tracks I thought "what a load of old rot - I can't believe I used to listen to this".

I'll be standing over by the wall now - feel free to commence throwing stones at your leisure.

  • Comment number 30.

stupidcriticsrus... maybe we can resume the conversation on Sunday when the new chart is announced , and we will all see Take That's chart position for " Said it all " which you are sure it will get to number one, while on Monday I was sure that it would not.

    Let's see.
I am so excited... my friends and very famous betting shops won't wager with me any more.. ( I wonder why... )

  • Comment number 31.

Pixie Lott is well better than Take That, with the sound on, off or in bloomin' China for all I care. Hurrah for Take That not being at number one!

  • Comment number 32.

yes! kevin was the clear choice - not jumping on the Nick band wagon :P

    example a:

    example b:

    example c:

    and *fan girl squee*

    altho i never did this...

  • Comment number 33.

stupidcriticsrus.... please remember our date tonight at 7pm when the new chart is announced.

Radio 1 will have revealed the chart positions , and you can see if your prediction of "Said it all " being at number one is correct.

    A week ago I thought it wouldn't.

    See you tonight.........

  • Comment number 34.

Take that at NUMBER 9 !

Remind me stupidcriticsrus, did we have any money riding on this ?

  • Comment number 35.

Who ever said that take that should be called "gary barlow feat. take that" really sure get their facts right.
Have you actually listened to their new album?

    1. The Garden - they all have solo parts.
    2. Greatest Day - mainly Gary
    3. Hello - Mark Owen
    4. Said It All - Gary and Mark
    5. Julie - Mark
    6. The Circus - Gary
    7. How Did It Come To This - Jason
    8. Up All Night - Mark
    9. What Is Love - Howard.
    Do I need to continue?

Gary's easily one of the best songwriters in the UK, and gets nowhere near the amount of credit he deserves.

You can hardly say that Mama Do beats Said It All on lyrics or music video let alone the actual tune itself.

  • Comment number 36.

Said it all is a classic song and the Circus is one of the best albums I have listened to for a long time.
This sort of record review is the sort of stuff you see from music people all the time and I find it a bit pathetic really.
When somebody starts a review with the sort of phrase like "I never really liked Take That " you are never going to get an objective review.

I myself have for a long time been into a completely different type of music ( Status Quo) . However I always liked Take That and am quite open minded when listening to music.
When I got the Circus album I listened to it and listened to it for ages as the songs were so good and the boys shared the singing around which I think really works.

I was therefore really interested to see exactly how well the Circus would translate to the stadium shows at Wembley and I must say out of all the many wonderful concerts that I have seen over the years the Take That Wembley concert was the best I have ever seen.
Said it all came across brilliantly and Take That proved that even though Gary Barlow is probably one of the best singer/song writers of all time, all the group can sing and play and make the band what it is.
It would seem that this review was written by one of the many people that think that it is clever to just knock people who are successful and doing well instead of giving them the credit that they deserve.

Vicki Lutas , how you can say Take That songs are "Grandma Fodder " and say you prefer the Backstreet boys is beyond me.

Have you not ever heard "Show me the meaning of being lonely or Shape of my heart"?
Once again when writing a review try and be a little more open minded and then you will not come across as biased and a little bit stupid!!!

  • Comment number 37.

1 Hutton Hammer , I must admit I do love it on this site , when we have true , knowledgeable fans of singers and acts ,who come on and really speak from the heart about the music and bands they love , and speak from personal experience.
Do feel free to comment about lots of other songs.
    The more, the merrier.

  • Comment number 38.

1Huttonhammer - i agree that BSB had their fair share of ballads, but i think Take That produce quite different style of ballads, ones that appeal to the masses and not just fans of the group or fans of boy/pop bands. The 'grandma fodder' comment, altho harsh is probably true in the sense that the appeal of the newer take that material is alot more wide ranging than BSB (past or present)..
