Lostprophets

Ah, the very long song title with the funny twist ending, how very emo.

Also, is there some kind of contest going on here with REM? Is this the answer to 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)'? Cos if so, this could be the dog bark which triggers the avalanche: Answer songs could become the new special guest appearance from Jay-Z.

Think about it - we've already got Alexandra Burke and Cobra Starship doing battle over which is worse, bad boys or good girls gone bad, and Chipmunk updating Britney Spears from the perspective of the oopsee (rather than the oopser). The Veronicas must be fuming, now that the Saturdays have claimed that their last song is "over".

Prepare for the December chart to be riddled with songs called 'You Are Alone, Actually', or 'Ghostbusters N Stuff'. And is there an anti-Robbie song on the way, a reworking of the old Chaka Khan song, called 'Ain't No Bodies'?

Well no, clearly not, unless Gary Barlow's in a snippy mood.

(. OI! BASSYBOY! CAN'T YOU READ THAT SIGN? THAT'S RIGHT, 'NO SPITTING'!)

All joking aside, this is the sound of Lostprophets channelling My Chemical Romance, or maybe MCR channelled Lostprophets in the first place. Either way, this has echoes of a certain black paradeground, and not just because of the opening line: "my soldiers march tonight in the city of your dreams".

You've got the martial, double-speed punk backbeat, the apocalyptic end-of-all-things lyrics, the massive terrace chant chorus, the strange effect on the vocals which makes them sound whispery and shouty at one and the same time, and the general air of churning turmoil. None of which are bad things. Dramatic rock music requires dramatic sounds to aid the...er...drama.

It also helps if you've got a song which has more hooks than Peter Pan's trophy cupboard, which this is. And it does raise expectations for their next album. In particular, it raises the expectation that it will include such songs as 'I Kissed TWO Girls, So Ner', 'Sex On Ice' and 'No, YOU Poke Her Face'.

Exciting, eh?
