You Me At Six

Sad news: apparently Fall Out Boy have actually fallen out, so badly that they're no longer sure if they want to get back together again. While Patrick Stump puts together his solo album, Pete Wentz doesn't think he wants his old job back, and in the meantime, Mark Hoppus from Blink 182 has been accepted as the band's new bass player.

Except he quit, just as suddenly as he arrived. And John Mayer, the US-only rock star who only hits the headlines over here when he's going out with someone like Jennifer Aniston, now claims that HE is the new bass player in Fall Out Boy.

That's what the internet at large - and Twitter in particular - has told us this week. And you know what? It's all lies.*

(. It's got an evil ballerina in it.)

I mention this partly because it's always funny watching celebs lark about trying to make each other laugh on Twitter, but mostly because there's a definite FOB feel to the YouMe's latest. Specifically the 'Thnks Fr Th Mmrs' thing going on with the chorus, and of course Josh's Stumpish warble-roar.

It's a shame they haven't quite managed to assert their own personality on their music though. It's not so much that they sound a lot like A band in particular, it's more that they don't really sound enough like themselves to stand out from lots of bands.

They've got the songwriting skills, they've got the playing skills, they've got the looks and the fans, but let's face it, they're not exactly Jedward when it comes to sticking in the mind, are they?

Or to put it another way, if Josh suddenly announced he was leaving, just as a joke on the internet, and would be replaced by someone out of Madina Lake, would it even be a gag worth retelling? Exactly.

* Except the bit about Patrick Stump's solo album. And I'm not really sure what the deal is with Fall Out Boy.

When I heard this song I could immediately tell it was You Me At Six, not because it has a different sound to it, because it sounds like Fall Out Boy except rubbish.

This doesn´t do anything for me. No originality whatsoever. I´d much rather go to a Jedward concert than listen to this. And that´s sayin´ something.

BTW Harry, it really looks like you can get your party outfit on tomorrow. Jedward don´t seem to be able to keep up with the competition.

My favourite tracks at the moment: Stylo by Gorillaz, closely followed by Gramophonedzie´s Why Don´t You and Empire of the Sun´s Without You (the single version). Floating around are Marina & The D, the new Black Eyed Peas RYB, The Drums´ Let´s Go Surfing (yeah I know it´s old) and Sub Focus´ Could This Be Real. Surprising the last one hasn´t got anywhere in the charts...?

Anyone else who´d like to share their own top 3?

  • Comment number 3.

    Yah! Listmaking!
My top 3 tracks I've heard recently are: Thieves In The Night - Hot Chip, Ambling Alp - Yeasayer and Giving Up The Gun - Vampire Weekend. Closely followed is the new Drums single Best Friend, The Blackest Lily from Corinne Bailey Rae's new album (deserves to be a single), Written In Reverse - Spoon and Starry-Eyed - Ellie Goulding.

Loving Stylo too but I feel it doesn't sound like a first single maybe a second or third one but not something to build up big commercial interest for the album. Not that it needs anymore hype.

Geesh I almost believed you about Mark Hoppus then! That would have been a bad mistake.

I'm not YMA6's biggest fan, they were pretty good live with Paramore though, but this song just like them is only alright really. Still nothing to make me go out there and get the album. FOB are far better.

And other people may not care if one of the guys left Madina Lake to join up with these guys but I would! :)

When´s the new Drums coming out? Haven´t heard it.

Like Ellie Goulding a lot! I think there´s so much more to her than meets the eye, or ear (at first sight and listen...)

Liking Hot Chip as well, but the thing is that I´ve never been an album person. So I don´t really buy that many. But I´ve heard the new one and there are several tracks that could be great singles!

One album I DID buy last year was Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear, and it´s really beautiful. Listen to 'Southern Point', THE TUNE of the year 09 I´d say. It lifts you up and slaps you round the face. Seriously.

Although not literally. That would be dangerous.

Don't know when the new Drums single is coming out, they haven't even named the album yet. I heard it on Zane Lowe's show last week so you'll find it on his blog at radio 1 till tuesday, if that doesn't work there's the demo up on Youtube (it's pretty much the same).

  • Comment number 9.

Sounds good on the demo, Harry. Really going back to basics. So simple i´ts tricky to get it right.

  • Comment number 10.

    * it´s...

  • Comment number 11.

ahaha @ comment #1. I did the exact same Harry. It's rubbish, unoriginal and instantly forgettable. Greg Jame's seems to love it. Funny, brids of a feather and all that?

  • Comment number 12.

Ellie Goulding's 'Starry eyed' is fantastic. 'Under the sheets' was massively naff, but 'Starry eyed' has redeemed her and means I will give her a second go.

Hot Chip's latest has grown on me MASSIVELY. I thought it was rubbish at first, now it's brilliant. Much more to come from them. They have announced they are at Glasto, win.

  • Comment number 13.

Slag them off all you like. Youmeatsix seem to appeal to a select few, including myself. Josh's writing skills are incomparable with Madina Lake, but yeah I like both bands && FOB too.

I truly believe they have come a long way since 'If i were in your shoes' etc, and they will go further. So maybe they did realease a single that is defianately not the best on Hold Me Down, but give them a chance and you will see the true beauty behind their lyrics + music. So don't just base your opinions of a band on one song, Actually LISTEN to the music and you'll find you're point of view just might change.

  • Comment number 14.

Blink 182 are the best band in the world!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 15.

    Yeah. Apparently the list goes:

    1. Blink 182
    2. The Beatles
    3. Sum 41
    4. Led Zeppelin
    5. Good Charlotte
    6. Pink Floyd
    7. All American Rejects
    8. The Rolling Stones
    9. Bowling For Soup
    10. The Beach Boys

  • Comment number 16.

lol, couldn't think of a better list myself. Well, maybe I'd put Bowling For Soup above The Rolling Stones.

  • Comment number 17.

I disagree with all you hopeless lot.
    You Me At Six,
of course they have their own sound.
    they are a fantatic band.

they don't try and be FOB at all, nothing about them scream FOB.
You FOB fans actually make me sick.

    1. YOU ME AT SIX
    2. YOU ALL SUCK.
