How I love Mike Oldfield

Hi there,

I鈥檓 Matt 鈥 the assistant producer on the Chris Moyles show. You may know me for being (supposedly) in love with Sarah, the former Unit Assistant (although it was really the other way around) or for supplying Chris with fantastic sound-a-likes such as The Feeling and Supergrass. Supergrass are great, aren鈥檛 they?

Now it appears I鈥檝e gained notoriety for a love of Mike Oldfield. If you鈥檝e never heard of him, he was a prolific composer, mostly in the 70s and 90s, who penned such hits as 鈥楾ubular Bells鈥 (aka the theme from The Exorcist) and 鈥楳oonlight Shadow鈥 (aka Dave Angel鈥檚 theme from The Fast Show). It all springs from my childhood, when my mum and dad used to play his greatest hits on the tape cassette in our Volvo 740. Expect a montage of his tunes on the show tomorrow鈥

Does anyone out there remember him? Is there a fan club I can join? Please tell me I鈥檓 not alone.

Also, if you have any more sound-a-likes you think could work on the show, drop me a line here.

Best,

M

P.S. For good measure, here鈥檚 a picture of Fatima Whitbread.

Ooh! Then you might know what the Nickelback sound-a-like was! Please tell me I didn't dream it...
It's never mentioned anymore - is there a lawsuit going on about it or something, lol

The very start of Panic At The Disco's new song-9 in the Afternoon is VERY similar to the start of ELO's classic Mr. blue Sky.

Not a fan, but I did buy Hergest Ridge when it came out cos all my mates had Tubular Bells. Yes, I am that old. But with Chris saying things like, 鈥淕reat words, great melody, great piano-playing鈥 this morning he鈥檚 clearly overdue at his R2 slot and probably secretly loves 鈥渢he Bells,鈥 but doesn鈥檛 want a slagging from his mate, Council Dave.

Hi Matt

I too am a fan of Mike Oldfield and his work. It amuses me that you say "70s and 90s", almost deliberately missing out the 80s. Okay so he wasn't so popular then! And then 1990 came and so did Amarok. Yay!

Soundalikes I have many, I do enjoy creating mashups when I get the chance. Off the top of me head though, the most soundalikey thing I can think of from the charts is Mika's "Relax, Take It Easy" sounds very much like the chorus of Cutting Crew's "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight"...

Maybe that's just me.

Surely Oldfield's best work was the Blue Peter theme tune?

Someone has to have mentioned the chorus of girls aloud's "my life got cold" and oasis's "wonderwall" by now right?
