As a personal friend of Davy Tweed, I can confirm that his decision to resign from the DUP was not an easy one. Although he was concerned that the party had apparently abandoned assurances given in the 2005 manifesto, he held out the hope that the leadership, who have been exceptionally coy about their post-election intentions (for good reason), would step back from the brink of trampling those assurances under foot. He was not alone in this. I heard whispers and whimpers that a variety of DUP personna were not happy and this, that and the other will happen. None of it did. The manifesto (or, as it is called on various sites, the manifiasco) has not ruled out power sharing with Sinn Fein, thus it rules it in. I have since tendered my resignation from the party (which will likely be met with ill-concealed glee in most quarters) which brings the total number of resignations from the Ballymoney Branch of the DUP to three in the past month.

There is no getting away from the fact that the 2005 manifesto assured the electorate:
"Inclusive mandatory coalition with Sinn Fein under d'Hondt or any other system is out of the question".
At St Andrews, the party, in an overnight change of policy, decided that it could do all of the above. Ruling in power sharing with Sinn Fein has simply ruled me out of the party. I'm sure it was no different for Davy Tweed.
