United Ireland by 2017

Someone pointed out to me that, during his Inside Politics interview, Gerry Adams said Sinn Fein wanted a 拢10 billion peace dividend - 拢1 billion each year for the next decade. Given we are now in the year 2007, my keen eared listener enquired whether that means Sinn Fein has officially abandoned its belief in a United Ireland by the centenary of the Easter Rising in 2016? Or does the Sinn Fein President want to have his United Ireland cake whilst still chewing on his British Treasury slice?

...although the greater point that should be made is that Gerry, I am sure, would be happy to forsake every pound of the 10 billion for a United Ireland today...

I feel a lower corporation tax rate would benefit the "wee six" but it is fraught with danger for the DUP. For while it makes economic sense, harmonization of the 2 tax codes on the island only serve to make the transition to a United Ireland less problematical in the long run.
It is also hard for Paisley to argue for a "seperate" corporate tax code for the "wee six". Doing so implies the "wee six" are in some way different from the UK, a position his political opponents will be happy to see him adopt.

Firstly, (Health Care) 60 euros to attend A+E departments; 50 euros just to see the doctor PLUS cost of whatever he does; 30 euros just to get Blood Pressure checked.
Secondly, (tax System) high tax in each earning bands (although only 20% heritance tax), higher VAT rates on most goods; Higher insurance / tax premiums on cars, houses etc; Thirdly, (education) only one educational exam system, Irish is complusory (especially if you want any government job (e.g. teaching, nursing, police etc);
Those policians with bid salaries don't really care either way, it will be ordinary people who will pay when Ireland is United. Not everything is greener on other side of fence.
