Aberdeen, Scotland

This was producer Garth's day. He's been having a nightmare of late. Yesterday we drove in an endless circle around Edinburgh after he decided to put the wrong postcode in the Sat Nav.

He then made me carry all 10 of our broadcasting bags into our hotel. He claimed it would make good video content for the website. You can watch it by .

To be honest, I'm getting quite used to the "luggage Olympics", which involves taking every piece of our equipment up to our rooms to ensure nothing is stolen from the van.

After finally getting to our hotel last night, I found Garth standing puzzled on the fifth floor corridor, trying to figure out why his key wouldn't work. It was then that I thought it be best to remind him that he was actually in 461, not 561.

Anyway, as the rain hurled around , Garth earned his stripes. The idea was for me to do a radio piece describing the waves crashing onto the deserted beach before talking about the fish market and then finishing by chatting about the oil and petrol storage facilities and tankers that give employment to some of the area's 3,000 Dutch.

Unfortunately, just before we went on air, our portable satellite dish blew off the vehicle roof in the general direction of Norway. I calmly got back into the car and told the studio what had happened.

However, our "hero" was made of sterner stuff. Garth may have been getting a drenching but he was undeterred. He battled on for the next five minutes before flinging open the doors to proudly tell me we were good to go, only for me to tell him I'd already done the piece on the phone.

The Dutch offered us the warmest hospitality by far on our road trip, inviting us to a private house five miles out of the city. We watched the 4-1 demolition of France with seven families, with men, women and children all robed in hallucinogenic orange.

I swear when the first Dutch goal went in not only did everyone in the living room leap to their feet to celebrate but so did BJ the dog, who came running in from the back garden before spraying everybody as he shook his sodden coat.

. Now the Dutch are convinced he is about to do it again as manager.
