Facebook says its "Hate Cornwall" page is OK

Graham Smith | 16:37 UK time, Monday, 18 April 2011

Finally got a response from Facebook, who tell me that since the "I Hate Cornwall" page directs its venom at a place, rather than a race or religion, there's no problem. "We have reviewed the page and it doesn't breach our or and Responsibilities," a spokesman tells me. "We also have pages which say 'I Hate Manchester' and 'I Hate Liverpool' and so on."

I'm not sure this is really something to boast about. Particularly when paragraph 3, clause 6 of your Statement of Rights and Responsibilities says:

"You will not bully, intimidate, or harass any user."
Or the next line:
"You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence."
But what do I know? I'm far too old to be on Facebook anyway.

  • Comment number 1.

Never been to Cornwall, but I certainly hate Manchester! And Birmingham - in fact all of the Midlands. London is pretty hateful too, and the whole of the south east of England as well! Essex is dreadful!

Clearly they just glanced at the title before making their decision. The page's user-generated content is clearly aimed at the Cornish as a people.

  • Comment number 3.

Facebook may well have allowed this group however I do feel it is a personal dig at t he true Cornish and does nothing to promote tourism especially in this financiall climate we are undergoing.
Many people will be glad of shorter breaks in Cornwall due to the unrest abroad and with lack of finances.I have read Mr Gareth Powells comments who referred to us Cornish as In bred freaks. This comment to me ,directed at any other resident in any country would not be acceptable.
