Too much information?

Graham Smith | 15:51 UK time, Friday, 5 August 2011

Was there ever any doubt that some Freedom of Information requests are politically-motivated? Cornwall Council has today answered (at a cost to the taxpayer of about £150) a question which could surely have been dealt with by other means: claimed annually by three individual Liberal Democrat councillors in Penzance. Coming soon - FoI questions to find out who is asking FoI questions. Yawn.

Particularly as this information is produced by the Council at this time of the year for every single councillor anyway. Way to go Tories

If this information was indeed available without an FOI then this is regrettable.

However, who does Mario Fonk get his broadband from? £275.76 for a year? surely a typo? that's £22.98 a month. A quick look on a popular price comparison site indicates many providers that offer a much better deal than that, e.g. I pay £90 pa, £7.50 a month.

I get my broadband from BT.Most if not all County Cllrs get their broadband paid by the council,or supplied by Cornwall Council. Broadband is crucial to my work as a cllr, it also saves the council having to post large heavy documents.

Mario: I hate to be all spendthrift about this when I know the important sums at Cornwall Council are thousands and millions, especially in this age of austerity.

I do appreciate that having broadband saves the council money on postage. I am however surprised that councillors can get -perhaps the most expensive- broadband package on the market and then charge the whole lot to the council.
