What it's like being an F1 presenter and producer

Post categories:

Jake Humphrey | 11:20 UK time, Monday, 27 September 2010

Hi guys,

I hope you enjoyed this weekend's show. I'm writing this blog entry in the production office at 1am on Monday in Singapore (about three hours after the finished).

We stay on European time for the Singapore GP which means out of bed at 1pm, and into bed at 4am, which is strange but seems to work for the media and the teams.

Anyway, to this week's blog.

I remember as a TV-obsessed kid wondering what happened when the presenters weren't on screen, so I decided to show you!

I know lots of you are keen to get as close to F1 and the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's coverage as possible, which is why I love doing the blogs and the tweets. But this weekend I've decided to up the ante.

I asked the director Richard if it was possible to record the talkback and the three camera feeds along with our actual output.

The result is embedded below. It is about as close as you'll get to being an F1 presenter without actually doing it.

You can hear exactly what I hear as the show gets going. You'll also spot the transmission on the bottom right as well as the three cameras we use.

Now, the start of the show is notoriously much easier than the end.

For the race build-up, we know pretty much what we're going to do and who we'll speak to. By contrast, after the programme we generally have 30-50 minutes to fill without any script or running order.

I'd love to know what you make of the video. You can hear last minute changes of shot, the plan unfolding inside the McLaren garage and how we make late, swift decisions to try to make the show as dynamic, exciting and entertaining as possible.

I should point out, by the way, that as the video was filmed within the confines of the Singapore track, it is only available to UK users.

Anyway, enough words, watch the video and let me know what you think!

    Excellent work Jake.

Is there any chance of been able to watch the interview with Bernie again that was on the forum?

  • Comment number 2.

F1Yorkshire, the forum is on the iPlayer

That must drive you insane! Anyway great job. Very Impressed.

    Fascinating stuff Jake. Brilliant.

  • Comment number 5.

    That's an excellent video, thanks.

I wouldn't mind having Camera 3's job though!

  • Comment number 6.

Jake - this is brilliant. What an excellent insight into how the show works. I'm so impressed it airs so smoothly after seeing that! The way the production cut to Alonso putting on his helmet and you modifying the script as you spoke was very impressive.

always wanted to know a bit more about this, fascinating!

Excellent blog Jake, keep it up!

Really interesting Jake. I see your apprentice (Lee) was hovering and watching what happens. I think she did a good job at the end of the forum having been dropped in at the deep-end.

Thanks for giving us an insight in how you get the excellent coverage to us & good luck with the CWG.

Great insight there. I love how it's all very much put together ad-hoc. The camera operators do a great job too.
What sort of information do you have on your iPad then? You reference it quite a bit, is it questions, stats, plan for the show etc?

  • Comment number 12.

That was fascinating Jake. I second Stevvy1986, the comment by piggyat10 was very childish. it is Jakes blog, he can do what he likes. Personally i enjoy his blog and look forward to reading it each week. I think the bbc coverage is excellent, both on the internet, red button and on bbc1. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jake! Presuming you guys are in transit whilst we reply to this blog, firstly - great blog Jake as is the video! Its stuff like this I love! secondly - how do I get a job with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú F1 crew?! :0) I can only imagine the pressure you guys go through - but what a great job! whether its filiming, presenting - whatever!. Absolutely fantastic stuff! and loved the forum again this week - just brilliant! I actually feel a bit for Lea for the next grand prix - nerves and pressure and all that but am sure she will do a great job, esp with EJ there to hold her hand :0) Fantastic as always! Thanks Again, Haze, Abingdon, Oxfordshire

  • Comment number 14.

The best job in the world. Well done Jake, the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú coverage is better than ever! Keep up the good work.

What are we going to do Dec-Mar?

  • Comment number 15.

Great stuff, thanks Jake. I love the F1 coverage all round in fact. Now if you could just tweak the script to include a title clinching winning streak by Lewis that would be lovely.

  • Comment number 16.

I felt nervous just watching that!

  • Comment number 17.

can't belive you seem so calm whilst all that anarchy is going on in the background. Impressed with the way you 'make it up' as you go along with eddie and david. very impressive and it must be slightly nerve wracking.
good job, well done to all the team, good to see all the hard work that goes into the production. I'd be a nervous wreck after 4hrs of that!

  • Comment number 18.

Absolutely fascinating, it makes me appreciate the tough job you guys & girls are doing even more. Please don't ever let go of the F1 broadcasting rights, keep it with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú! Best F1 coverage ever!

  • Comment number 19.

Wow, you guys certainly have a lot to deal with during the show. A real eye opener for us as to what goes on. You all make it look so simple on tv!!! Fantastic show as usual. I am a huge fan of the forum. Maybe one day you could get Michael Schumacher on the Forum? Fantastic feature on the behind the scenes and Red Bull during qualifying.

Keep up the great work. Can't wait for F1 in HD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 20.

A shame about the geo-blocking preventing me from viewing the blog. Despite being in central London.

I'm sure it is good - best of luck in Delhi.

  • Comment number 21.

    Loved it, thanks very much.

  • Comment number 22.

Fascinating stuff! Amazing how you cope with having several conversations at the same time. It shows how challenging a live TV show is with so much going on. On top of that you have to avoid cars in the pitlane too!

Thank you for sharing this Jake - and keep up the good work!

  • Comment number 23.

Jake did you find out which idiot was putting the caption up on the forum that it was pre-recorded and not to send e-mails etc. I hope you give them a dry slap.

  • Comment number 24.

That's fascinating and scary in equal measure. It must be extremely difficult listening to your interviewees' answers while at the same time taking direction.

I assume Cam3 was used at some point!

Cheers for the insight Jake, most enjoyable and informative.

  • Comment number 25.

Wow! I had no idea how it all worked! Personally, I didn't think about the fact there are a lot of people behind the scenes and naivly beleived that it just happens as if by magic!

Definitely very interesting to see the different camera shots and hear the talkback going on. I also like the way you get to have input into the shots and all the ad-hoc script changes!

    Keep up the good work!

  • Comment number 26.

A fascinating insight. I've always wondered how much is scripted, since you never know all that much about what's going to happen.

  • Comment number 27.

    Hi Jake,great video.Loved all the shirts.Say HI to D.C AND E.J.

  • Comment number 28.

It sounds quite confusing with all the producers talking over you in the ear pieces, as well as your last minute input and changes that are made. I bet its hard to stay concentrated and focus on what's going on.

Its all paid off though, it runs extremely smoothly!

    Cheers Jake, keep it up!!

  • Comment number 29.

    Hi Jake,

Great coverage as usual from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú and the forum was one of the best so far. I thought EJ was going to talk to the fans all night long - make sure he's still not there!

As for the race, it was an awesome sight to see Singapore in all its glory - only Singapore can but on an F1 show such as that.

Webber and Red Bull pulled off a fantatic 3rd place finish. Real shame that Lewis failed to score as on my last blog response I stated that the top 5 drivers can't afford to finish out side the points. Lewis can still do it mathematically but with him not finshing yesterday his task is much, much tougher from now on in.

Should Lewis fail to win, I'm really hoping for Webber to do it. It would be awful to see Alonso win, especially after the German race.

On his return, I thought Nick Heidfield did a good job until he was taken out my Schumacher.

4 races left (or 3 listening to Bernie yesterday) and its still up for grabs. Really hoping Lewis can do but he needs to win at least 2 of 4 remaining races left.

Also nice to hear that F1 will be HD from next year.

Best of luck at the CWG and looking forward to seeing Lee take over in Japan.

  • Comment number 30.

As an aside before watching your video Jake, there are a couple of points to make.

I don't believe we need an hour's build-up to qualifying and I don't think Martin's grid walk adds anything to race day. The drivers don't want to be interviewed on the grid and the teams shouldn't ask them to. Just my opinion.

  • Comment number 31.

Great insite as usual Jake, how do you manage to stay focussed? It would be rather distracting trying to concentrate on what is going on in front of you and listening to the director at the same time.

  • Comment number 32.

isn't it the greatest hypocrisy that all the praises are left(i need a sick bag)but the criticisms are(not surprised)deleted.as long as it doesn't contain insults or swear words.don't ppl have the freedom to express their views.personally i wish formula 1 went back to the former tv station that hosts it or you change a particular co-host.sick and tired of this pro-button...anti-hamilton views and analysis.you are professionals so should be objective and not sentimental.i can't stand that DC(always switch off whenever he speaks).anybody who is priviledged can do this job..so no big deal.just enjoy the ride mister.

  • Comment number 33.

Amazing Jake, thanks for providing this.

Lee will have her work cut out in Japan to make it as seamless as you do - good luck to her.

  • Comment number 34.

Thanks for the fascinating insight into the first 20ish mins of a show. What a great job done by all every race. This video has made me appreciate even more what you guys do. All the very best to Lee for Japan. Keep up the good work guys. I get the feeling EJ cant keep still, am I right? xx

  • Comment number 35.

    @Drowningnotwaving

That is your opinion only. I'm sure there are many fans (me included) who like the 1 hour qualy build up and grid walk are great. Why any F1 fan would complain about more coverage is beyond me!

  • Comment number 36.

    Hi jake

that was was a real treat thankyou. The margin for error is so small, and the split second decisions which you make just fade into a seamless transmission.

I would also like to take the apportunity to thankyou for posting this kind of stuff on the website. You posted one which was similar a while back and enjoyed that alot.

My son always remembers you off CBeebies. I guess presenting with a V8 howling in the background is a bit different than introducing charlie and lola.

  • Comment number 37.

    @chuckfo comment 33,

As far as I can see only one comment has been removed, and that was for breaking the house rules. Criticisms such as the length of buildup and Martin's grid walk have been left in, as they're constructive in nature.

As for "anybody" being able to do Jake's job, seriously have a try at it one day. Set up a camcorder, even the camera in your phone, and try delivering a link to it. I guarantee you it's difficult, and that's before you factor in the noisy and hectic working envionment, the jetlag, the director talking in your ear, the last-second (never mind last minute!) changes to the script and running order, and the ever present need to ensure you meet Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú compliance guidelines (witness the quick-thinking interruption to EJ on the forum when a fan used some slang).

Presentation looks easy on TV when it's done well, but I promise you it's not.

As for wishing F1 would return to "the former tv station that hosts it", remember that since the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú took over we've gained
    - All three practice sessions on the red button
    - Saturday practice available online
    - No adverts
    - A choice of commentaries or the option of no commentary
    - The post-race forum, usually around an hour in length
    - Onboard camera feed
    - Driver tracker (since Silverstone)
    - Classic F1 online and red button
    - Did I mention no adverts?

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú have raised the bar. The coverage may not be perfect, but I believe the production team and presenters do listen to *constructive* criticism and act accordingly.

  • Comment number 38.

Agree totally with Dave (#37). Constructive criticism is welcomed by anyone on any subject in any walk of life. Telling people to get a life isn't constructive criticism, but talking about ways they could improve, such as less pre race, or more features, or things like that, is constructive criticism, because they can take those comments, discuss them, and possibly make changes. Telling someone to get a life isn't even criticism, let alone constructive criticism, so will be ignored.

  • Comment number 39.

Absolutely fascinating coverage and a credit to all the people who work on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú F1 coverage.

    Keep up the excellent coverage.

PS The visuals of the Singapore skyline from above remind me of Blade runner.

  • Comment number 40.

OK - so let me give a detailed and "at length" appraisal of Jake's video blog!

    "Ummmmmm - WOW!"

    That is all! :)

  • Comment number 41.

Excellent piece Jake shows what a fantastic show can be produced with such a slick and efficient team. Also get to see that you actually use that i pad after all.
But DC what a prima donna every time your off transx he is preening himself for the next shoot, whilst Eddy is just Eddy.
Keep it up and good luck in India.

  • Comment number 42.

Really cool Jake, even though I'm not a fan of the grid walk etc before the race your coverage is very professional even with the gawking 'fans' down the pit lane on their mobiles telling their mates to turn on the tele...as at Silverstone this year!.

  • Comment number 43.

"The drivers don't want to be interviewed on the grid and the teams shouldn't ask them to." Drowningnotwaving

I acknowledge that you have a right to your opinion, but the way you state that its as if you talk for every driver, which you dont. If you were a driver (which you are not), this would be your opinion for you and you only.

Out of interest, DC was asked this weekend if he enjoyed being hunted down by Martin before the race when DC was driving and DC's response was that he enjoyed talking to TV on the grid because it broke up the tension of waiting for the start of the GP.

Thats from an actual ex-driver. So I'm afraid your opinion seems to be badly misinformed.

  • Comment number 44.

pmj you need to learn the difference between constructive criticism and complaint. I don't have any need to share anyone else's opinion, nor do I demand anyone else shares mine.

The qualifying programme is too long, as it doesn't really discuss what happened in the hours of free practice that precede it, which I usually watch. That might include more detail on different configurations etc, such as the differing aero set-up for the McLarens at Monza. Other than that, the rest is just padding. For the second race running I got fed up with Brundle desperately trying to find someone to speak to who wasn't already speaking to that German lady. It adds nothing to the build up.

  • Comment number 45.

Just read review of F1 game looks amazing.

  • Comment number 46.

#44. If it adds nothing to the build up, why has it lasted so long? If you think it adds nothing, fair enough, but clearly the majority of people don't agree, as if they did, the gridwalk would've stopped years ago. Also it's not his fault if for example drivers aren't on the track at the time, or a driver is finishing an interview with Tania or anyone else.

  • Comment number 47.

Great work as usual Jake! Nice job :)

  • Comment number 48.

"I don't have any need to share anyone else's opinion, nor do I demand anyone else shares mine. " Drowningnotwaving.

Well you seem to think that all drivers from all teams should share your opinion about not being interviewed on the grid. What can I say, you are killing yourself on here.

  • Comment number 49.

That is an awesome piece of behind the scenes. Wow. I must second the comments that have gone before about the smoothness of presentation considering the amount of stuff that is going on... barring camera 3, good gig if you can get it!! :O)

I really enjoyed the race too, lots of shouting at the telly and frantic texting around. Superb and great it is still right down to the wire for the last closing rounds of the season!!

Just to chip in a bit: I love Martins grid walks. It is very luck of the draw as to the content, but isn't that what it is all about. Some days he gets wall to wall interest and others we end up with Nicole thingy or a celebrity/band plugging which ever team is sponsoring the visit. It is all part of it as some tracks have different build ups... please don't get rid of it though as it is part of the ritual.
Same as the build up before qualis, I love it as it gives me a chance to properly swat up on things that have happened since the last race and I love the little VT's and info things/ interview things that get put together. Again, it feels inclusive that as a home spectator I can get more info on what is happening and what the mood at the track is like.

Anyway, moving on as I am fully in support of how things are done at the moment - and I am even starting to enjoy EJ's chip ins...some still make me shout at the telly but I can see his value!

This was a brill blog and compliments your other brill blogs!! Please keep things like this coming as it is always interesting, eye opening and informative for us avid viewers.

Have fun at CWG, keep safe and see you (possibly) in Korea.

Much respect to the whole team, watched it a 2nd time and that really would drive me nuts!!

    xxx

  • Comment number 50.

Cam 3 went a bit rouge there..got to go film pretty girls in the paddock instead!

Great blog as always Jake, thanks.

  • Comment number 51.

Having got into F1 in a BIG way this year, I am absolutely impressed that the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú coverage just gets better and better at each race. You and your team always deliver an excellent show, and with the likes of Martin, DC and Eddy to name but a few …it is just the perfect combination. Fantastic insight into the production process and behind the scenes footage in your blog.

Favourite bits from Singapore… Martins Grid walk (as always!)… awesome race… Eddy’s trousers …and the great Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú coverage.

Good luck to Lee in Japan !

Jake – Is it true you have the BEST job in the world !

  • Comment number 52.

That was a really interesting video. There is no way I could do your job.

As for Brundle's 'Grid Walk', it's one of the most entertaining parts of the build up.

  • Comment number 53.

Wow, Jake. That is awesome. It's a bit of a shame that you guys don't get to enjoy the atmosphere more, but, I guess, like the rest of the pit lane, you are there to work, not play... yet.

Yeah, what was up with Cam 3? Can it do something next time, or is it just waiting for leg shots???

  • Comment number 54.

That is crazy, the amount of people saying stuff in your ears must drive you insane!

However, it must be noted, that this is, by far, the best presentation of f1 i have seen. You seem to have a really good team behind you and everything seems natural and effortless. Great job.

Well done to lee stepping in in the end however when she said to mark he was in second place it was just funny to see marks reaction.

p.s. dont get rid of the grid walk ...fact!

  • Comment number 55.

    Hi Jake,

Thanks for the insight into the background work. I'm impressed, Jake. Not only do you have to talk coherently, but also deal with interviews, while the incessant and distracting babble in the ear continues to provide you with information.

  • Comment number 56.

ya its not bad jake a lot is involved, hard work with all the wires and changes getting made.surely they could have one more person there to help out by making sure all your backs are getting watched with out you having to tell the camera crew to watch there backs..it will make it a lot easier.do you need an assistant,im available and ready to pack my bags lol.you got the best job out im jealous

  • Comment number 57.

Can I echo the comments re Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú presentation. It is light years ahead of ITV, without factoring in the ADVERTS. The whole experience is so much better, professional and EJ is such a star for all the wrong reasons, he excelled on the forum yetsreday he is so non F1 PC!!!!
jake is superb, making it look relaxed even when he obviously isn't!
And Mr Couldhard is the cool ex=Pro diver, add BrundleFly's pit lane interuptions of the other journos and it all adds up to a winning production ANF NO ANNOYING ADD BREAKS (brakes) when some incident always happened. ITV can't do sport anyway but Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú do not ever let F1 go to Sky or I'll stop my Licence Direct Debit. Qualifying, the race, red button F1 and R5L it is all superb

  • Comment number 58.

Excellent. You guys have a great team. Are the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú the only ones allowed to wander through the teams garages? I think the inclusion of Eddie makes the show have that edge. especially the way he does his "jig" when he get excited about something. Good work chaps

  • Comment number 59.

WHAT A DREAM JOB WITH PAY YOU LUCKY MAN.. GISS A JOB
I CAN DO THAT.. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

  • Comment number 60.

WHAT A GOOD JOB TO HAVE TRAVEL THE WORLD WITH F1 DREAM JOB
    WHAT ABOUT KOREA ??

  • Comment number 61.

You certainly have to have nerves of steel to be to handle pressure like that. Well done Jake, David and Eddie.

  • Comment number 62.

Hi Jake some fascinating footage. I love the way everyone is saying how well you do... but I would far rather have your job than the guy who actually controls which shot we are seeing! - or the cameramen.

How hard is it to listen to you saying you are changing your script or asking the camera for a completely different shot seconds before he hits the button to take you live to many millions of viewers. We see how hard it is to move around in front of the camera ... how hard must it be to walk backwards keeping you or Martin in shot with all that going on around you? For that matter how do you manage to persuade Stefano to stand waiting for so long when all he wants to do is get involved making sure the cars are ready for the grid?

Many on here are saying the preamble is too long - but say nothing about how it could be improved. I would not miss DC or EJ being sidelined - I would far rather have MUCH MORE from Ted Kravitz - or Lee.

I think more should be made of "The Chain". I think the bit used is not dynamic enough and what we do hear should replace the pathetic "Bernie Jingle". We wanted "The Chain" back because in the old days it was the perfect adrenalin boost calling the audience to silence like a theatre show overture. Using it an hour before the race means it is the bit we are most likely to miss.

Oh - and please can we have more of the team's input during the race? - the comments we used to get were very informative. It could form the starting point of the red button forum - which I would rather see broadcast than some of the pre-amble.

All in all this must be one of the hardest broadcasts to make - no cosy sitting in a studio or pre-recorded shows for safe TV! Congratulations to the WHOLE team.

  • Comment number 63.

I've been really impressed with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's coverage of F1 since they've had it back from ITV. It's great that they're making the most of the coverage and giving the (majority of) viewers what they want. I love to watch footage like this, and it's not often you get to see how sports programming comes together in this way. It amazes me how everything looks so professional when it goes to air, but is very much on the fly, second-to-second decision making in the background.

I would also like a special mention for those who create the pre-recorded sections. Whoever decided to use music from Nick Cave's score for The Proposition for the opening moments is a genius. Inspired!

  • Comment number 64.

That's really amazing! How do you manage to carry on talking with all that going on in your ear?! Crazy! I never thought TV presenting was easy, but I never imagined it would be that hard! Well done - great coverage as always!

  • Comment number 65.

Loving your efforts in putting this together. Makes me appreciate more how you guys ever managed to hold it together when covering JB winning his first championship last year in Brazil!

  • Comment number 66.

oh my god, how does your head not explode with all that going on in your ears!

loved the show as usual, Martins grid walk is always a highlight to the weekend, I'm surprised that German women hasn't slapped him yet :) and the blogs are great, will be interesting to see Lee's take on the Grand Prix next time out.

as a recent convert to F1 I have to say I'm hooked, keep up the good work.

  • Comment number 67.

You guys do a wonderful job, and I, for one, love Martin's grid walk, especially his tussles with Tania. Rubans always seems happy to see MB, he knows it's more air time for his sponsors. MB avoids the drivers who don't like to talk on the grid, and there is always the chance he might meet someone famous, or just wannabies. It's part of what you get in the hospitality side of F1 - MB keep the grid walk PLEASE.

Jake much respect to you - I'd no idea how bad the producer was in your ear. The fact you keep EJ under control is a credit in itself - DC always looks like he's about to deck him. Without EJ though I doubt you'd get interviews with the likes of Bernie and the ANSWERS you got from Bernie with any other interviewer.

Good luck to Lee in Japan, see you back in Korea - all being well.

  • Comment number 68.

    Brilliant work!

Love it at 18:30 in when you can hear the director talking directly to Jake and you can see Jake nodding/shaking his head in response!

    Love it!

  • Comment number 69.

Thanks for taking a break in the forthcoming Japanese F1. Can't wait.

  • Comment number 70.

Absolutely fascinating Jake. Thanks so much for showing this.

  • Comment number 71.

Hey Jake,is there any way that viewers in Ireland can see your blog video. It's so annoying that we aren't able to view content like that in our area!! Great show at the weekend. As a huge Red Bull fan it was great to see the piece on Christian Horner and his race weekend, really enjoyed it. Would love to see more stuff like that. We'll miss you for Japan. Let's hope the Korean GP goes ahead. We're getting way too close to the end of the season for my liking. A long winter without F1 looms!! This season has been fantastic, I'm sure the last few races will be equally exciting. Go Seb!!

  • Comment number 72.

    Hi Jake,
    Great blog as always.
Liking the video blogs that you have been doing lately, maybe some more in the future?
Thanks and keep up the good work.

  • Comment number 73.

Does anyone know what music was playing during the qualifying round up and grid that ted kravitz was narrating?

  • Comment number 74.

Tania always pokes Martin when she wants to interview next, Tania was so nice to Martin but thats Martins Job, to get the exclusive!
As ever, F1 on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is great and for the 2nd season, to add R5L's commentary of Croft, Davidson, Holly in the Pit Lane and Karun Chandok's addition has been great, Chandhok should really join the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Team if he doesnt get a ride, he has been treated with such disgrace by Hispania chasing Money.
Anyway...my small nark with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's F1 Coverage is too much talk, I mean where was the Press Conference? It was on the big screens but the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú decided to rush it off, why wasnt it put on?
Also one Mr J.Legard but I hope the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is true to the rumours and ditches him.
Hopefully Lee will do a good Job in Japan, she will need all the luck with DC and EJ to try and tame, will anyone be doing Lee's Job? Allan McNish? Holly Samos doubling up? or a return for Louise Goodman?
Still, keep it up Jake and look after yourself in India, looking like the CWG, they may not happen!
(Like the Video, any change of having that on the Red Button as a feature?)

Jake, you're slicker than an option tyre...fantastic insight and presentation.

By the way, does anyone know what Vettel was doing on Martin's grid walk? When the interview started, he gave Martin a sign with his fingers and Martin said "Don't go there, we're LIVE" or words to that effect?

    Great show...can't wait for Japan!!!

  • Comment number 76.

Wow! I loved that video! Thank you Jake, what a brilliant idea! I could watch hours and hours of that.

By the way, contrary to someone's earlier comment, I think the hour's lead up to qually and the race is absolutely brilliant and nearly the best part of the show - that and the forum afterwards makes the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's coverage really, really special.

    Zoot:

Martin had just been hurrying Tania along with her questions to Vettel, so that he could ask one. As Tania finished there was a bit of banter between the two of them. As Tania was leaving Vettel made a gesture pointing from one to the other and jokingly making out that there is something going on between them! Martin then picked up on what he was doing. It was quite an amusing moment.

love it always like it when we get closer and understand what goes on either in a team princpals day or your (jake's) day. i think it gives us a great insight into how f1 is made

and @75 i think Vettel on the Gridwalk was having a joke by saying either "is she your wife" or "do you know each other"

Great blog, but couldn't see the video content as I'm not in the UK :( Please can you make the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú F1 content available internationally? Including the iPlayer? We miss out on so much of your fabulous coverage! Please consider making it available for your International fans!

Going to miss you in Japan, hope you have a great time in Delhi and see you in Korea *fingers crossed*

Superb! Superb! Superb! Dad worked for the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú for 30+ years, telecine then VT. I worked for Ferrari UK for 17+ years, so for me it's in the blood so to speak. As they'd say in the US - Great job!

I think the only way you could improve things would be to have Lord Murray of Walker back commentating, but, alas. . .

    Forza Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú !!!

could we have this on the red button next season

    Hi Jake

As a third year TV Production student I find all your behind the scenes blogs fascinating and it just shows how hard live TV is to look slick and polish.

    Thanks for the insight!!

  • Comment number 83.

Wow Jake, an excellent insight into the production, I enjoy this nearly as much as watching the Grand Prix itself. It's always nice to see what happens behind the scenes, as those people are the unsung heroes of broadcasting.
It would be really nice though if you could do a piece on the Saftey Car driver Bert Mylander, as again we often see him driving round the track it would be nice to see a little from his perspective, as he has a great deal of responsibility, especially when the weather gets interesting!

But back to topic, great blog and keep up this truly insightful blog.

    Fascinating stuff.

It would be even more interesting to hear the talkback on Sky Deutschland when Martin Brundle muscles Tanja out of the way.

  • Comment number 85.

    Great job as usual Jake!

As an RBR fan I really enjoyed the behind the scenes skit with Christian Horner. I have never really attended an F1 race, but been following it for 20 years now. And always wondered what the actual day was like for many Presenters, Drivers, and Team Staff. Thank you very much for showing it.

    Cheers from Miami, FL

Great to see and hear what goes on, thanks Jake. Really love the Beeb coverage and thoroughly enjoy you and the team - also the commentary from Martin and Jonathan, an excellent mix of driver perspective and knowledgeable info. More please! No changes required!

What a fantastic video. Both interesting and highly impressive, most of all because you could not get a better example of teamwork. Guess I've been watching / attending F1 since when Murray started commentry and also thought ITV did a good job. But (are you listening Bernie?) the Beeb team are light years better. The difference is that, watching, Jake and the team make you feel part of it all rather than just a viewing spectator. I love the cameradery, the quips and dynamics of the whole on screen team. But thanks too to all those behind the cameras, my whole year is planned around Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú F1 weekends and you just make me hate winter even more. For sure, Suzuka ain't gonna be the same without you Jake.

  • Comment number 88.

What a fantastic insight to live TV. You all make it seem so relaxed & Professional. Great work :)

I just love the amount of air time the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú has provided for F1 coverage, all the red button stuff, really expands the TV experience. Please keep it going everyone on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú team.

It would be interesting just how many people are on the team at the race venues?

  • Comment number 89.

Wow, this is absolutely fascinating. Thanks very much Jake!

  • Comment number 90.

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's coverage of F1 is 'better' than ITV although many of the gimmicks are annoying.

Personally I find the F1 forum dull, just more whining. Why can't we see more stuff behind the scenes with the engineers? It's typical Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú that F1 is dumbed down. I'd like to see a group of mechanics and engineers followed for a full race weekend and interviewed. At the moment it's just the same drivers and team bosses whining and Eddie Jordon telling everyone how brilliant he is.

ITV were fools to themselves for packing adverts into the race, F1 was the only sport they didn't cover without advert breaks breaking up the action.

However, real F1 fans miss the Eurosport coverage which for me was the best. Come on Bernie give it back to Eurosport.

  • Comment number 91.

Fascinating stuff. Great to see how the VT and live dovetail.

  • Comment number 92.

That was so intersting. When you are watching it live you are not really aware of all the organisation so its really intersting to see the show from all the different screens. definately do it again loved it!

  • Comment number 93.

Just watched the video great insight to the fantastic work you guys do at the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.Just proves Timing is everything...Very well done..

  • Comment number 94.

    That is fantastic to see.

It gives a real insight into the workings of the programme.

    Great idea.

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú really is the best place for F1, and Jake is an extremly good front man.

  • Comment number 96.

Thanks for this Jake, proves what I've always said, the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú coverage of F1 is just the best.

  • Comment number 97.

Great video, thanks. You've made 'walking and talking' live look easy from the day you started presenting F1 and I've been a Jake fan ever since; it's like you've never done anything else. (I'm not the gushing kind, btw, so this is rare praise from a tv cynic). Keep it up, don't ever stop. Cheers, James. ps. Monza forum was simply brilliant, worthy of a BAFTA, methinks.

  • Comment number 98.

Oh boy I wish we could see that video here in the States. I've seen the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's F1 coverage while abroad and while our guys do an okay job on Speed TV, they pale in comparison to what you all have over in the UK.

Be very, very thankful for what you have.

Also be thankful you don't have to hear about NASCAR.

    AND

Be thankful that your shows are presented at a reasonable hour. To watch live it means 8 AM on a Sunday unless you live in California, then its 5 AM.

  • Comment number 99.

i would love to be able to watch this, but cos im in Ireland i cant. it looks good from the pics on the video

  • Comment number 100.

Fascinating stuff, you just need to explain why the iFad, I have never seen it serve any purpose other than a fashion accessory.
