Jake - this is brilliant. What an excellent insight into how the show works. I'm so impressed it airs so smoothly after seeing that! The way the production cut to Alonso putting on his helmet and you modifying the script as you spoke was very impressive.

Great insight there. I love how it's all very much put together ad-hoc. The camera operators do a great job too.
What sort of information do you have on your iPad then? You reference it quite a bit, is it questions, stats, plan for the show etc?

Fascinating stuff! Amazing how you cope with having several conversations at the same time. It shows how challenging a live TV show is with so much going on. On top of that you have to avoid cars in the pitlane too!

That's fascinating and scary in equal measure. It must be extremely difficult listening to your interviewees' answers while at the same time taking direction.

Wow! I had no idea how it all worked! Personally, I didn't think about the fact there are a lot of people behind the scenes and naivly beleived that it just happens as if by magic!

Definitely very interesting to see the different camera shots and hear the talkback going on. I also like the way you get to have input into the shots and all the ad-hoc script changes!

It sounds quite confusing with all the producers talking over you in the ear pieces, as well as your last minute input and changes that are made. I bet its hard to stay concentrated and focus on what's going on.

Great coverage as usual from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú and the forum was one of the best so far. I thought EJ was going to talk to the fans all night long - make sure he's still not there!

As for the race, it was an awesome sight to see Singapore in all its glory - only Singapore can but on an F1 show such as that.

Webber and Red Bull pulled off a fantatic 3rd place finish. Real shame that Lewis failed to score as on my last blog response I stated that the top 5 drivers can't afford to finish out side the points. Lewis can still do it mathematically but with him not finshing yesterday his task is much, much tougher from now on in.

Should Lewis fail to win, I'm really hoping for Webber to do it. It would be awful to see Alonso win, especially after the German race.

On his return, I thought Nick Heidfield did a good job until he was taken out my Schumacher.

4 races left (or 3 listening to Bernie yesterday) and its still up for grabs. Really hoping Lewis can do but he needs to win at least 2 of 4 remaining races left.

Also nice to hear that F1 will be HD from next year.

Best of luck at the CWG and looking forward to seeing Lee take over in Japan.

As an aside before watching your video Jake, there are a couple of points to make.

I don't believe we need an hour's build-up to qualifying and I don't think Martin's grid walk adds anything to race day. The drivers don't want to be interviewed on the grid and the teams shouldn't ask them to. Just my opinion.

Great insite as usual Jake, how do you manage to stay focussed? It would be rather distracting trying to concentrate on what is going on in front of you and listening to the director at the same time.

isn't it the greatest hypocrisy that all the praises are left(i need a sick bag)but the criticisms are(not surprised)deleted.as long as it doesn't contain insults or swear words.don't ppl have the freedom to express their views.personally i wish formula 1 went back to the former tv station that hosts it or you change a particular co-host.sick and tired of this pro-button...anti-hamilton views and analysis.you are professionals so should be objective and not sentimental.i can't stand that DC(always switch off whenever he speaks).anybody who is priviledged can do this job..so no big deal.just enjoy the ride mister.

That is your opinion only. I'm sure there are many fans (me included) who like the 1 hour qualy build up and grid walk are great. Why any F1 fan would complain about more coverage is beyond me!

As far as I can see only one comment has been removed, and that was for breaking the house rules. Criticisms such as the length of buildup and Martin's grid walk have been left in, as they're constructive in nature.

As for "anybody" being able to do Jake's job, seriously have a try at it one day. Set up a camcorder, even the camera in your phone, and try delivering a link to it. I guarantee you it's difficult, and that's before you factor in the noisy and hectic working envionment, the jetlag, the director talking in your ear, the last-second (never mind last minute!) changes to the script and running order, and the ever present need to ensure you meet Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú compliance guidelines (witness the quick-thinking interruption to EJ on the forum when a fan used some slang).

Presentation looks easy on TV when it's done well, but I promise you it's not.

As for wishing F1 would return to "the former tv station that hosts it", remember that since the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú took over we've gained
- All three practice sessions on the red button
- Saturday practice available online
- No adverts
- A choice of commentaries or the option of no commentary
- The post-race forum, usually around an hour in length
- Onboard camera feed
- Driver tracker (since Silverstone)
- Classic F1 online and red button
- Did I mention no adverts?

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú have raised the bar. The coverage may not be perfect, but I believe the production team and presenters do listen to *constructive* criticism and act accordingly.

Agree totally with Dave (#37). Constructive criticism is welcomed by anyone on any subject in any walk of life. Telling people to get a life isn't constructive criticism, but talking about ways they could improve, such as less pre race, or more features, or things like that, is constructive criticism, because they can take those comments, discuss them, and possibly make changes. Telling someone to get a life isn't even criticism, let alone constructive criticism, so will be ignored.

Absolutely fascinating coverage and a credit to all the people who work on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú F1 coverage.

Keep up the excellent coverage.

I acknowledge that you have a right to your opinion, but the way you state that its as if you talk for every driver, which you dont. If you were a driver (which you are not), this would be your opinion for you and you only.

Out of interest, DC was asked this weekend if he enjoyed being hunted down by Martin before the race when DC was driving and DC's response was that he enjoyed talking to TV on the grid because it broke up the tension of waiting for the start of the GP.

Thats from an actual ex-driver. So I'm afraid your opinion seems to be badly misinformed.

pmj you need to learn the difference between constructive criticism and complaint. I don't have any need to share anyone else's opinion, nor do I demand anyone else shares mine.

The qualifying programme is too long, as it doesn't really discuss what happened in the hours of free practice that precede it, which I usually watch. That might include more detail on different configurations etc, such as the differing aero set-up for the McLarens at Monza. Other than that, the rest is just padding. For the second race running I got fed up with Brundle desperately trying to find someone to speak to who wasn't already speaking to that German lady. It adds nothing to the build up.

Just read review of F1 game looks amazing.

If you think it adds nothing, fair enough, but clearly the majority of people don't agree, as if they did, the gridwalk would've stopped years ago. Also it's not his fault if for example drivers aren't on the track at the time, or a driver is finishing an interview with Tania or anyone else.

Well you seem to think that all drivers from all teams should share your opinion about not being interviewed on the grid. What can I say, you are killing yourself on here.

That is an awesome piece of behind the scenes. Wow. I must second the comments that have gone before about the smoothness of presentation considering the amount of stuff that is going on... barring camera 3, good gig if you can get it!! :O)

I really enjoyed the race too, lots of shouting at the telly and frantic texting around. Superb and great it is still right down to the wire for the last closing rounds of the season!!

Just to chip in a bit: I love Martins grid walks. It is very luck of the draw as to the content, but isn't that what it is all about. Some days he gets wall to wall interest and others we end up with Nicole thingy or a celebrity/band plugging which ever team is sponsoring the visit. It is all part of it as some tracks have different build ups... please don't get rid of it though as it is part of the ritual.
Same as the build up before qualis, I love it as it gives me a chance to properly swat up on things that have happened since the last race and I love the little VT's and info things/ interview things that get put together. Again, it feels inclusive that as a home spectator I can get more info on what is happening and what the mood at the track is like.

Anyway, moving on as I am fully in support of how things are done at the moment - and I am even starting to enjoy EJ's chip ins...some still make me shout at the telly but I can see his value!

This was a brill blog and compliments your other brill blogs!! Please keep things like this coming as it is always interesting, eye opening and informative for us avid viewers.

Can I echo the comments re Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú presentation. It is light years ahead of ITV, without factoring in the ADVERTS. The whole experience is so much better, professional and EJ is such a star for all the wrong reasons, he excelled on the forum yetsreday he is so non F1 PC!!!!
jake is superb, making it look relaxed even when he obviously isn't!
And Mr Couldhard is the cool ex=Pro diver, add BrundleFly's pit lane interuptions of the other journos and it all adds up to a winning production ANF NO ANNOYING ADD BREAKS (brakes) when some incident always happened. ITV can't do sport anyway but Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú do not ever let F1 go to Sky or I'll stop my Licence Direct Debit. Qualifying, the race, red button F1 and R5L it is all superb

Hi Jake some fascinating footage. I love the way everyone is saying how well you do... but I would far rather have your job than the guy who actually controls which shot we are seeing! - or the cameramen.

How hard is it to listen to you saying you are changing your script or asking the camera for a completely different shot seconds before he hits the button to take you live to many millions of viewers. We see how hard it is to move around in front of the camera ... how hard must it be to walk backwards keeping you or Martin in shot with all that going on around you? For that matter how do you manage to persuade Stefano to stand waiting for so long when all he wants to do is get involved making sure the cars are ready for the grid?

Many on here are saying the preamble is too long - but say nothing about how it could be improved. I would not miss DC or EJ being sidelined - I would far rather have MUCH MORE from Ted Kravitz - or Lee.

I think more should be made of "The Chain". I think the bit used is not dynamic enough and what we do hear should replace the pathetic "Bernie Jingle". We wanted "The Chain" back because in the old days it was the perfect adrenalin boost calling the audience to silence like a theatre show overture. Using it an hour before the race means it is the bit we are most likely to miss.

Oh - and please can we have more of the team's input during the race? - the comments we used to get were very informative. It could form the starting point of the red button forum - which I would rather see broadcast than some of the pre-amble.

All in all this must be one of the hardest broadcasts to make - no cosy sitting in a studio or pre-recorded shows for safe TV! Congratulations to the WHOLE team.

I've been really impressed with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's coverage of F1 since they've had it back from ITV. It's great that they're making the most of the coverage and giving the (majority of) viewers what they want. I love to watch footage like this, and it's not often you get to see how sports programming comes together in this way. It amazes me how everything looks so professional when it goes to air, but is very much on the fly, second-to-second decision making in the background.

I would also like a special mention for those who create the pre-recorded sections. Whoever decided to use music from Nick Cave's score for The Proposition for the opening moments is a genius. Inspired!

as a recent convert to F1 I have to say I'm hooked, keep up the good work.

You guys do a wonderful job, and I, for one, love Martin's grid walk, especially his tussles with Tania. Rubans always seems happy to see MB, he knows it's more air time for his sponsors. MB avoids the drivers who don't like to talk on the grid, and there is always the chance he might meet someone famous, or just wannabies. It's part of what you get in the hospitality side of F1 - MB keep the grid walk PLEASE.

Jake much respect to you - I'd no idea how bad the producer was in your ear. The fact you keep EJ under control is a credit in itself - DC always looks like he's about to deck him. Without EJ though I doubt you'd get interviews with the likes of Bernie and the ANSWERS you got from Bernie with any other interviewer.

As ever, F1 on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is great and for the 2nd season, to add R5L's commentary of Croft, Davidson, Holly in the Pit Lane and Karun Chandok's addition has been great, Chandhok should really join the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Team if he doesnt get a ride, he has been treated with such disgrace by Hispania chasing Money.
Anyway...my small nark with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's F1 Coverage is too much talk, I mean where was the Press Conference? It was on the big screens but the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú decided to rush it off, why wasnt it put on?
Also one Mr J.Legard but I hope the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is true to the rumours and ditches him.
Hopefully Lee will do a good Job in Japan, she will need all the luck with DC and EJ to try and tame, will anyone be doing Lee's Job? Allan McNish? Holly Samos doubling up? or a return for Louise Goodman?

Martin had just been hurrying Tania along with her questions to Vettel, so that he could ask one. As Tania finished there was a bit of banter between the two of them. As Tania was leaving Vettel made a gesture pointing from one to the other and jokingly making out that there is something going on between them! Martin then picked up on what he was doing. It was quite an amusing moment.

love it always like it when we get closer and understand what goes on either in a team princpals day or your (jake's) day. i think it gives us a great insight into how f1 is made

and @75 i think Vettel on the Gridwalk was having a joke by saying either "is she your wife" or "do you know each other"

Wow Jake, an excellent insight into the production, I enjoy this nearly as much as watching the Grand Prix itself. It's always nice to see what happens behind the scenes, as those people are the unsung heroes of broadcasting.
It would be really nice though if you could do a piece on the Saftey Car driver Bert Mylander, as again we often see him driving round the track it would be nice to see a little from his perspective, as he has a great deal of responsibility, especially when the weather gets interesting!

But back to topic, great blog and keep up this truly insightful blog.

As an RBR fan I really enjoyed the behind the scenes skit with Christian Horner. I have never really attended an F1 race, but been following it for 20 years now. And always wondered what the actual day was like for many Presenters, Drivers, and Team Staff. Thank you very much for showing it.

What a fantastic video. Both interesting and highly impressive, most of all because you could not get a better example of teamwork. Guess I've been watching / attending F1 since when Murray started commentry and also thought ITV did a good job. But (are you listening Bernie?) the Beeb team are light years better. The difference is that, watching, Jake and the team make you feel part of it all rather than just a viewing spectator. I love the cameradery, the quips and dynamics of the whole on screen team. But thanks too to all those behind the cameras, my whole year is planned around Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú F1 weekends and you just make me hate winter even more. For sure, Suzuka ain't gonna be the same without you Jake.

I just love the amount of air time the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú has provided for F1 coverage, all the red button stuff, really expands the TV experience. Please keep it going everyone on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú team.

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's coverage of F1 is 'better' than ITV although many of the gimmicks are annoying.

Personally I find the F1 forum dull, just more whining. Why can't we see more stuff behind the scenes with the engineers? It's typical Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú that F1 is dumbed down. I'd like to see a group of mechanics and engineers followed for a full race weekend and interviewed. At the moment it's just the same drivers and team bosses whining and Eddie Jordon telling everyone how brilliant he is.

ITV were fools to themselves for packing adverts into the race, F1 was the only sport they didn't cover without advert breaks breaking up the action.

However, real F1 fans miss the Eurosport coverage which for me was the best. Come on Bernie give it back to Eurosport.

Fascinating stuff. Great to see how the VT and live dovetail.

That was so intersting. When you are watching it live you are not really aware of all the organisation so its really intersting to see the show from all the different screens. definately do it again loved it!

Great video, thanks. You've made 'walking and talking' live look easy from the day you started presenting F1 and I've been a Jake fan ever since; it's like you've never done anything else. Oh boy I wish we could see that video here in the States. I've seen the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's F1 coverage while abroad and while our guys do an okay job on Speed TV, they pale in comparison to what you all have over in the UK.

Be very, very thankful for what you have.

Also be thankful you don't have to hear about NASCAR.

AND

Be thankful that your shows are presented at a reasonable hour. To watch live it means 8 AM on a Sunday unless you live in California, then its 5 AM.
