Thursday 22 September 2011

Sarah McDermott | 12:05 UK time, Thursday, 22 September 2011

There's quite a lot of sport planned for this evening's Newsnight, including from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's Sports Editor David Bond who'll be telling us five ways competitors could cheat at the 2012 Olympics.

Then we'll be joined live by Olympic champion and anti-corruption campaigner Michael Johnson.

Gavin will be meeting the Russian oligarch who bank rolls the Independent and Evening Standard newspapers, Alexander Lebedev.

And our Diplomatic editor Mark Urban will be watching David Cameron's intervention speech at the UN later.

NOT CHEATING AT THE 2012 OLYMPICS WOULD BE TO DISHONOUR THE HOST NATION

CORRUPTION, in post-integrity Britain, is the psychological 'staff of life', and now that 'sport' is industrial and commercialised, the Games might do well to have their permanent home here. The 'national' Lottery could be given the on-site betting franchise, and a fashion for betting on losers encouraged.

WILL CAMERON BRING PERSONAL FOIBLE TO THE UN AS HE DID TO THE NAT. TRUST?

Surely, Cameron's PERSONAL influence should stop at Conservative PARTY matters? Government is supposed to be cabinet/party of power/ Parliament. Dave has only NOTIONAL state primacy from the Queen.

Were we not so reliant on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú, he would be challenged over his Presidential behaviour. Dave did not gain high office on grounds of competence, he simply scored high marks, among his ilk, FOR ALL THE NEGATIVE ARTTRIBUTES BELOVED OF WESTMIINSTER DENIZENS. He is only elected leader of the Conservative Party. The rest is smoke and mirrors.

Would you hire a kindergarten manager on the grounds that he has had success in animal training?

Why do we put up with this feudal charade?

FOR EVIL TO TRIUMPH ALL THAT IS REQUIRED IS FOR GOOD MEN TO DO NOTHING.

  • Comment number 4.

Can't wait to see how the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú and western MSM will distort and twist Ahmadinejad's speech, to be given at the UN later today.

Here's his speech from last year...it mentioned the possibility of a US 9/11 conspiracy quite a bit.

'the Russian oligarch who bank rolls the Independent and Evening Standard newspapers'

Do they know? And don't mind?

Considering Mr. L's pugilistic preferences, maybe not.

  • Comment number 6.

what is the difference between an Arab spring and an application by the Palestinians that has been on the table since 1967, the 242 resolution and the 338 resolution? Is it because the Jewish lobby in the Senate has Barrack Obama by the unmentionables and he has to do what all US Presidents do...namely nothing....

  • Comment number 7.

"YES WE CAN" - BUT ONLY BY SELLING OUR SOUL TO THE DEVIL (#6)

In the Age of Perversity, great play is made of DEMOCRACY, yet political gain is OVERTLY BOUGHT. Obama has big debts to repay. We had honours for cash - America has a president for cash.

Before every UK General Election, the parties receive big money from those hoping for favourable legislation. Such a joke that MPs must 'declare interest' when debating, but PARTIES DO NOT HAVE TO DECLARE 'FAVOURED DONORS' in the same way.

The OED has been purging redundant words. Bye bye DEMOCRACY.

  • Comment number 8.

THE TROUBLE WITH MISSIONARIES - THEY DON'T ‘DO’ THE HOME COUNTRY

Dave is sure he his bringing The Word(s) 'FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY' to the oppressed masses of Elsewhere. Isn't that always the way with missionaries?

Here at home, we are only free to follow the rat-maze AS LAID OUT BY WESTMINSTER and any rat who squeaks: "Westminster is corrupt, Democracy is being subverted, this government is illegitimate", is ignored, as the insignificant rodent he is.

What we need is a saviour missionary . . .

  • Comment number 9.

  • Comment number 10.

how does Cameron square his UN speech with being a patron of the JNF whose polices would be against human rights in the uk?

or that the uk has kept people in prison without charge for over 10 years with no prospect of freedom?

  • Comment number 11.

HOME AND AWAY IN THE AGE OF PERVERSITY (#10)

I heard some wally going on about Cameron's CONFIDENCE - the correct word is ARROGANCE.

He truly is the heir to Blair. That ability to simply NOT SEE the fabric of UK life shredding under Westminster tyranny, while prancing the world stage mouthing: "Mother of Parliaments" "Rule of Law" and "Democracy", is a talent few ever master. I won't name the few, we all know them, and they have each cast their long shadow over the future, leaving a legacy of war-pollution - physical and psychological - that will endure interminably.

UNTIL GOOD MEN STOP DOING NOTHING WE WILL ALWAYS GET OURSELVES ANOTHER ONE

David Cameron attacks Ahmadinejad after UN walkout

Mr Cameron derided Mr Ahmadinejad from the United Nations podium minutes after the Iranian leader's ferocious attack on Western powers and Israel.

  • Comment number 14.

All 27 European delegations left the chamber midway through his speech, a few minutes after the Americans had vacated their seats. The protest was planned in the expectation that Mr Ahmadinejad would prove controversial.

David Cameron, who addressed the assembly shortly after Mr Ahmadinejad, said: "He didn't remind us that he runs a country where they may have elections of a sort but they also repress freedom of speech, do everything they can to avoid the accountability of a free media, violently prevent demonstrations and detain and torture those who argue for a better future."

  • Comment number 15.

The Iranian leader surpassed even his own outspoken standards as he accused the US of using the "mysterious" September 11 attacks as a pretext to launch wars on Iraq and Afghanistan.

'Sounds like a plan to get everyone to watch Limp-Dump conference Question time ?'

Yes, I agree. Newsnight fails again.

The time slot is perfect for in depth reporting and in depth debate of the day's major news stories, but time and time again NN goes off on stuff that is of interest to.... who exactly?

The global economy is in melt-down, people are fearing for their jobs, vast numbers of self-employed are eating into savings to keep businesses running but the handsomely paid public sector employees at Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Newsnight, wo clearly feel no affects of the recession verging on depression, indulge themselves in a lot of nonsense that is not relevant to the majority.

Paul Mason should be on tonight leading with the economic melt-down - NN is worrying about 2012 when the rest of us are worrying about returning to the 1930s!

    arab spring

given the remaining arab kingdoms have promised so much free cash to their people to bribe them so there is no arab spring and that to pay for it they have to keep oil above $80 then it looks like anyone who uses oil will be paying for what cameron calls the 'new opportunity'?

How to get Economic Growth Going ! ( none of the panel on QT seem to have any sound ideas )

    /news/uk-england-15009316

Of course the eco-fascist protesters are doing their level best to support the current energy cartel and keep energy prices as high as possible to increase profits for corporate multinational big business. This is quite the opposite of what environmental protesters attempt to portray, but the sad fact is that if shale gas is developed the Corporate Nazi's will use their Climate Scam as an excuse to waste it on generating electricity instead of extending the life of natural gas as a very useful domestic fuel in the UK. We need to start using our plentiful supply of good quality UK coal to generate electricity again and stuff all the CO2 scam claptrap !

Once again the possible 500 quid on your energy bill and your job under threat from at least a 25% increase in business energy costs totally avoided by question time. Perhaps some fat cat Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú journalists now feel uneasy about appearing to support a policy which steals from the most vulnerable in UK society to give to the super rich already. It really does our alleged democracy no favours to avoid this subject, perhaps especially since the eco-fascist Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú has not yet published the latest CERN research on cloud formation and the sun's impact on climate change. They were quick enough to publish the latest CERN data suggesting that the speed of light could be exceeded, perhaps questioning Einstein the great man of physics himself ?

Absolutely agree. Feel very uneasy about how the energy companies - like the banks - drift on in their own sweet way, impervious to public criticism and pussy-cat threats from government to be transparent about how they arrive at their ludicrously high costs

Not helped of course by our Energy Minister, Chris Huhne, pressing for huge amounts of financial investment in 'green' power via our energy bills. Yes we all want cheap, green energy. A crisp, pollution free world, nobody ever being unkind to one another and angels singing to us on high from wispy clouds.

Unfortunately most of us live in the real world. Unlike, dare I say...

Control what goes into the edit suite, control how that is shaped, and control who gets to 'comment' (see that average 'Mum' whose background Newsnight was less than clear on before, was on the panel) and you have a lot of control.

    Uniquely, in many cases.

Then, if something awkward does manage to scrape through, there are of course rules that can soon handle such an eventuality.

    Possibly misplaced.

after once again falling asleep waiting for QT then resorting to the iPlayer the next day brought me to the firm conclusion that NN trumped QT on content alone...now how many times do you say that? Newsnight over Question time...shurely a first...

    One more time...

Ahmadinejad's speech this year was corker imho.

Read it here and read it carefully. You decide if they are the words of a delusional mad man, as depicted by the West’s MSM, or a lucid, cogent and sentient man.

  • Comment number 33.

    armadinnerjacket at the UN:

"....Who used the mysterious September 11 incident as a pretext to attack Afghanistan and Iraq, killing, injuring, and displacing millions in two countries with the ultimate goal of bringing into its domination the Middle East and its oil resources?

Who nullified the Breton Woods system by printing trillions of dollars without the backing of gold reserves or equivalent currency? A move that triggered inflation worldwide and was intended to prey on the economic gains of other nations.

Which country’s military spending exceeds annually a thousand billion dollars, more than the military budgets of all countries of the world combined?

Which governments are the most indebted ones in the world?

Who dominates the policy-making establishments of the world economy?

Who are responsible for the world economic recession, and are imposing the consequences on America, Europe and the world in general?

Which governments are always ready to drop thousands of bombs on other countries, but ponder and hesitate to provide aid to famine-stricken people in
    Somalia or in other places?

Who are the ones dominating the Security Council which is ostensibly responsible for safeguarding the international security?

There exist tens of other similar questions. Of course, the answers are clear. The majority of nations and governments of the world have had no role in the creation of the current global crises, and as a matter of fact, they were themselves the victims of such policies..."

Who would've thunk it, me and Ahmadinejad singing from the same page. He's up against it most of the time as the Govt media complex always play around with his words and show pictures of people walking out on him -the Israel crowd -when he gives speeches at the UN.

Always a bit cautious when inclusivity is made total.

But the MSM does indeed seem to be keen on brainwashing, and deploying censorship and propaganda in doing so.

It just seems an injury on insult when one is compelled to pay for it when one sees it for what it is and does feel that is right.
