It's scary how fast the Olympics are coming, and we're all feeling it now - it's like having a big countdown clock going in your head.

I was getting the car washed a few days ago and I opened a newspaper while I was waiting to see a big article proclaiming that there were fewer than 30 days to go.

My heart-rate must have leapt 20 beats per minute - but I'm absolutely ready for it.

The main thing is that I'm in the best form of my life. As long as you're where you want to be with your form, you can handle it. It's when you're struggling that it gets tough.

I've always been good at waiting, at the hanging around you have to do in the build-up to a big event. Wasting time is no problem for me - I'll watch DVDs or just put my feet up. I'm good at doing nothing.

There's also a lot of work to be done in last four weeks before Beijing. I'll be on my bike every day, and the weeks are all carefully structured so we have something we have to do each day.

You have to do your best to take care of yourself - eat healthily, sleep lots, take enough rest - but your brain can also play tricks with you.

I'm always concerned about traffic out on the roads when I'm on my bike, but at this stage I can't help thinking that one car door opening in front of me could be the end of my Olympic dream.

We have be incredibly cautious in our preparation. Our team doctor insists that we carry around with us small bottles of antibacterial hand-wash, and use it with almost scary frequency.

When we first started doing it we probably thought it was a bit much, but when the British squad was out in Palma for the World Championships in 2007, the German team - who were staying in the same hotel as us - all went down with

We were washing our hands with the gel every half an hour - we weren't allowed to touch banisters, to shake hands. The Germans were eating at the same buffet as us, using the same facilities - but not a single one of us got ill. After that we were convinced.

I'll be blogging every week now until the Olympics, so I'll keep you up to date on how things are going. I raced in Germany this weekend - my last race before Beijing - and now it's down to Newport in south Wales to join the GB training camp.
