Doctors
Well ouchers you may remember that I posted a while back even though I had a horrible cold and was battering to type through the snot. Well said cold has magically turned into a chest infection, lovely stuff.
This lead to me travailing down to my doctor’s surgery and seeing a doctor that I don’t see very often.
It starts normally, she forgets to come and collect me but a nice receptionist takes me to the right place. (For what happens when the system for helping people with disabilities does not work ) she listens to my chest. She said it didn’t sound too bad, and that I’m probably struggling to get rid of the infection because I’m inactive.
Me, inactive?
I’m actually quite a busy person; I spread my time between collage, duke of Edinburgh, goalball, guiding, British sign language and some were fitting a bit of a social life in to the mix. I’m one of the busiest people I no.
What got to me more than the fact I was labelled as inactive was the reasoning behind it. She saw me walk in with my long cane sit down and then based her diagnosis on the fact that my disability means that I must spend all day every day sitting at home in front of the TV basket weaving (I really don’t do craft) or something.
A preconception without knowing anything about me as a person, a preconception because of my disability.

Oh, that so gets me riled!
I'm a long white cane user, and end up hiking for miles, nearly every day, always carrying about a 35 to 40 pound, (not sure what this is in kilos) backpack, waving the resistant force, literally running to not miss the bus, and then standing holding all my groceries waiting forever for other busses! Whenever I'm so sick I can barely stand up, I still have to try and manage this in order to rehydrate!
How do doctors think we get around anyway! Aughh!

What is WITH doctors, and why are more of them not being struck off for some the disability discrimination they dole out?

Firstly, get well soon and secondly, have you thought of changing your doctor? I know it wasn't your regular medic you saw but I wouldn't be happy with a surgery which employed someone with so little knowledge about those who are differently abled.
Trouble is, despite all the legislation, doctors still receive little or no training in disability issues and so you get astonishing levels of ignorance.
Not so long ago, I was told by a consultant(admittedly working for the DWP) that I couldn't possibly be as disabled as I claimed because I have a sense of humour!!!
