The Glass Box for Thursday
Is it really Thursday already?
The Glass Box is the place where you can comment on what you heard on PM, interact with other listeners and get responses from the people who make the programme. This is proving to be a useful tool for us, and we hope, for you.
Just click on the "comment" link. If you've never commented on the Blog before - don't worry. There's a simple registration process you only have to go through once.
Don't worry either if you didn't catch the whole programme, or were busy doing other things and not giving us your full attention. If there was something that "caught your ear" we want to hear about it.
The Glass Box is named after the booth outside the PM studio where we all discuss the programme at 18.00 every weeknight. We try to be honest and constructive. Sometimes there is criticism, and the criticised get a chance to explain themselves.
And so it should be here. The people who make PM will read the comments posted, and will sometimes respond. Unless it's Roger Sawyer editing. He's completely hopeless.

Thanks to Kevin Connolly for his well balanced coverage of the UVF announcement today.
A difficult one for many people in Northern Ireland who have lost family members at the hands of these and other violent people.
An interesting topic has been raised by many over the last few days and one which has been largely glossed over in the recent euphoria over Paisley/Adams et al.
"Fire and Brimstone" politics has been coined as the reason why many young "loyalists" decided to join organisations like the UVF but, we have heard precious little regret or remorse from the politicians involved.
Perhaps Dr Paisleys accomodation with Sinn Fein is a measure of underlying regret and an attempt to put right some wrongs.
A public statement would go a long way to help with the future but I'm not sure anything will be forthcoming.

Eddie, can you please ensure that when advertising a scheme such as the emailbritain one, you send people to check the instructions on the website rather than just give out the email address. Would save people like me rushing headlong to comply and only afterwards checking the T&Cs and realising I had wasted everyone's time.
I was editing Thursday's programme. Because of the elections we had to steer clear of any political stories so we did more foreign stories than we would on an ordinary day.
Having said that, the UVF announcement that it would put its weapons beyond reach was interesting. One of the dilemmas we face is that when a story like this is done comprehensively by our colleagues on the World At One, how do we take it on for the PM audience. I felt that Kevin Connolly did a great job putting the whole thing into context - explaining just how unpleasant this group was at is height -- and getting a reaction from Sinn Fein. But your comments would be welcome...
Jasper, thank you. I think that is what you do so well with news that has already been well turned over - put it into context. If we are not directly involved in the intricacy of specific situations we tend to lose the detail that makes the current development either important or relevant.So context is vital.
I rarely comment on the glass box, because although I may disagree with the opinions expressed, I rarely disagree with their presentation. Unless Patricia Hewitt is on.
Oh well, Anne P, I did the same. But, then, it was the PM Thursday Newsletter that I submitted so it probably didn't arrive ;o)
I did think the 'radical feminist' interviewed in your NI abortion story got a bit of an easy ride. I know it's an emotive issue and not the easiest subject to tackle on the radio I'm sure, but all the interviewers questioned seemed to play into the interviewees hands, rather than challenging her position in any way at all. As the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú doesn't have an official position on abortion, nor any bias towards pro-life or pro-choice, please strive to ensure this is reflected in the interviewing of any more, 'radical feminists'.. or indeed pro-lifers..

I take it from this that you mean abortions should never be perfomed in NHS premises.
I found the item quite thought-provoking. My initial reaction was to wonder why not abort, then I changed my view and decided it would be better to let nature take its course. Many women who have abortions suffer mental anguish afterwards, so why go to all that surgical trouble and possibly make things worse?
