PlayStation bounces back

It was hard not to spot the optimism beaming from both Sony execs and developers about the future at the Game Developers Conference last week.
The concerns and hushed whispers at last year's GDC about whether Sony had made fatal errors with the platform's launch have given way to positivity.
Sony's Phil Harrison, head of worldwide studios, looked relaxed when I spoke with him on Thursday, although that may have been more to do with the fact he was not giving a keynote this year and was able to enjoy some of the sessions.
I had spoken to Mark Rein, of Epic, earlier in the week and he told me he had never doubted that PlayStation 3 would be anything other than a success. Of course Epic did release on PS3 this week so his comments have to be seen in that light.
UT is the kind of franchise PlayStation has been crying out for - a hard core first person shooter with credibility. The Xbox has long been seen as the platform of choice for FPS fans who don't play on PC.
The 360 of course has Halo 3 and many feel that game set the benchmark for online FPS play.
Mark Rein told me: "We've surpassed what Halo 3 offered."
I'll let you - the readers - argue over that one.
Epic are one of the finest exponents of hard core action titles and UT's availability on the PS3 before the Xbox 360 will delight Sony.
In term of what's to come for the PS3 I was given a sneak peek at titles in the works in London two weeks ago.
Unsurprisingly, sequels for the platform's biggest launch titles are in the works. Cynics will say that studios are merely fixing problems in the original versions, the result perhaps of having to rush the titles out in time for launch.
Here's what I was shown:
Motorstorm 2 is due out in time for Christmas and moves the action away from the desert locale of the original. Gamers will be able to race around a lush island environment, full of interactive vegetation.
The game will feature four-player split-screen action, righting one of the obvious failings of the first game.
The title is some months away from completion but the game's engine looked rock solid and the graphics were as impressive as one would expect from one of the best-looking racing franchises.
Resistance Fall of Man was a bit of a disappointment when it was released. The game promised much but suffered from a lack of originality and flat game design. The world the designers had created was interesting but playing in it felt dull.
So what will Resistance 2 offer? I was shown only a trailer but it's clear developers Insomniac want to make a statement. Online the game will host 60 players simultaneously. It screams epic and tellingly it concludes with the line: "You haven't seen what we are truly capable of."
So what else was I shown? Well, I was shown a trailer for a game not due out till 2009 but was sworn to absolute secrecy. Apparently, Sony just wanted to give a glimpse of what the console will be capable of.
In fact, the game is such a secret that when I mentioned the game to Phil Harrison last week he was unsure at first whether even to admit the title existed. When I explained I had been shown it under strict Non Disclosure Agreement terms he looked relieved.
I don't mean to be a tease - all I can say is that I was left speechless. If the footage I was shown truly is "in game", as told to me by the Sony PR people, then we could be on the brink of a step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion.
And there I'll leave it. Feel free to speculate on what I was shown. I cannot, of course, confirm or deny what it was....

2008 is PS3's year and all the big games of this year are apparently just PS3 exclusive
Well, you've given us plenty of hints. You mentioned the fact that you were shown London's titles, which possibly narrows it down. Those known to us that you didn't mention are either The Getaway 3 or Eight Days (i'm thinkin' it's Eight Days if Phil Harrison hesitated to confirm the game's existence - he wouldn't have hesitated if it were The Getaway 3 cause we all know for certain that that's in the making) If it isn't Eight Days, then it can only be something that hasn't been announced before. Regardless what it is, it's just good to hear that Sony's got a rock solid line-up for not just 2008, but for the years to come. Unlike the short-sighted individuals over at Microsoft.
Can u at least tell us if it will be shown at E 3 ?

i do believe that by the end of 09 the ps3 will be better graphically and will have better gameplay than the wii and 360 mainly because blu-ray

My guess is as we have seen the VR glove patent filing back several months ago with tactile response, a project that takes advantage of that technology?

It's got to be 'The Getaway' or 'Heavy Rain' or a new IP. I'd imagine it's the Getaway because you where at the London Studio's. Although we have seen glimpses of the engine before.
Glad to hear about Motostorm 2 coming out for Christmas, the first version was such an awesome game, but just left you knowing it could have been so much better (The titles had been rushed out for launch).
It would be interesting to hear if you got shown 'PlayStation Home' I'd like to read about that if so.

Final Fantasy VII?
I bet you its GETAWAY 3 because I haven't heard much about it since it was talked about at the launch of the PS3 // if its not im still going to buy that game // The original GETAWAY to me was up there with GTA at the time and im a hardcore GTA fan along with my cousins // stealing & driving a GTR was awesome in game

I'm guessing it's not God of War 3, as Sony have confirmed its existence. I'd doubt it's the FFVII remake, as Square are probably too busy dealing with all the FFXIII games at the moment. It's probably Heavy Rain or a sequel to an existing IP, as Darren hints that it's something we have a chance of guessing - if it was a completely original IP that no-one had heard anything about, none of us would be able to make a reasonable guess.
My first guess was that, it's LA Noire or Heavy Rain.
Although I must admit this sounds like a new IP or some kind of unannounced sequal:

All games are staggered as to when they are allowed to be released.
It looks to the customer the developers are making progress with the graphics and gameplay.
Sony could release GT5 tomorrow if the game was ready to ship.
As GT5 is coming out in USA 1st (they always get the games before Europe, due to a bigger market) and the PS3 is Region Free for games, buy the USA version if Sony have not put a "hack" on the game so it does not play on PAL machines.
They make you wait so everyone buys other games till the game you want comes out.
GTA 4 was suppose to come out last year but was delayed till April 08.
GT5 / Res Evil 5 / Alan Wake and Duke Nuke Em 4ever have all been delayed till 2009

I have a funny feeling it might be CRYSIS as i know they are trying to port it over but is still really a myth currently....
although i own a PS3 nothing will ever mount to the performace that a PC can potentialy offer..

I like the sound of a good line up for the PS3 and its always good to have new titles to look forward to.
However what I dont like is the negative microsoft comments that seem to be inevitable on any posts like these.
Why does it have to be one or the other the more competition there is the better for all of us and the more choice we have in systems and games can only mean win win for the consumer.
So to finalies what I am saying stop being a fanboy and enjoy yourself with whichever system takes your fancy.
Just for everyone information, it's been confirmed this morning, that Phil Harrison is leaving Sony :( It's a sad sad day.
The fall of the Xbox 360? Yeah right.
The PS3 does have a pretty strong line up but do does the 360. With titles like GTA IV (with exclusive content), Gears of War 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2 and Halo Wars. All of which will be mllion sellers. While the PS3 may have a good year ahead of it, it won't be overtaking the 360 anytime soon.

I'm sorry but what? Halo 3 certainly did not set the benchmark for online play, i can think of many games it copied let me name some:
Unreal tournament (all versions), Counter Strike etc
People... get real and stop this blind PS3 worship. The PS3 and Xbox360 have very similar specs inside so we won't be seeing anything truly awe inspiring from either console. As a former PC gamer, now a console gamer, I can say without any bias that the PC makes the PS3 and X360 consoles look like 8bit machines.
That said, who is the fool, Sony or the european gamers whom Sony clearly just see as a cash cow to be milked. (i.e. a european PS3 model with downgraded tech inside but at the same overly priced cost as the older higher spec'd. PS3). Need I say more...

I was going through a list yesterday and listen to this... For every PS3 exclusive this year, there is an Xbox 360 exclusive. I'll list you some of them... Fable 2, Halo Wars, Ninja Gaiden II, Gears Of War 2, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Lost Odyssey, Frontlines: Fuel Of War, Beautiful Katamari, Too Human and thats to list a few of them! and you have big selling multiplatform games on the 360... GTA IV, Vegas 2 etc etc

Seems to be the only thing we seem to get around this blog now, other than Apple fanboism.
Lets look at this in a different way shall we.
The benchmark for FPS play is not Halo 3 any more, its Call of Duty 4. Stats of use on XBL might say its Halo 3, but it doesn't seem to have to sort of buzz going around gamers like there is with COD 4. With that said Resistance 2 having 60 players online running at 60fps will be very impressive on a technical standpoint. But if they can not match the engine to the sort of quality on COD 4, then you'll be lucky if you ever see a full 60 players in one game for long.
A new Unreal Tournament? If I were to get the game, and that's an if since I have not bought a UT game since 2003, then I'll wait for the PC version, which I suspect many other people who are fans of the game will do.
Getaway 3? Well, some would say the series was a decent GTA knock off. But with GTA 4 out this year, more are likely to get that.
Overall its starting to look to me that after the amazing year of 2007 for gaming, 2008 is a bit of a hangover. The PS3 still is pinning its hopes on 2 games, MSG4 and a new Final Fantasy and hoping anything else that comes out flies.
The 360 after a killer year last year, doesn't seem to have much going for it ether. Aside from GTA 4 and eventually Resident Evil 5 and Gears 2, and that if they make it for their planned 2008 sometime release, there is nothing else catching peoples eye.
Even the Wii is looking bleak. After Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii come out, what else is there? Plenty of software thrown together quickly and called a "party game" no doubt but nothing that will get the core gaming market excited.
Well, unless Star Wars Force Unleashed has full Wii-mote motion for lightsaber battles. If it does, there will probably be many geeks that might not see the light of day for a good while! :-/

^__^ And why exactly is it you want to see the fall of the Xbox 360? Does your life mean so little as to get that emotionally involved with your box of electronics?? Can't you see that competition in this industry is healthy and will only ever benefit the customer in terms of price, functionality etc. If there was nothing other than the PS3 in the console world then there'd be no drive for Sony to make a better machine. Do you think that the PS3 online system would be anywhere near as good (if it existed at all) had the Xbox not set a standard for online console gaming? And that's just one example...

Phil Harrison, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) will resign on February 29th. Harrison has been with Sony since 1992, when he joined Sony Electronics Publishing. That Sony branch later evolved into Sony Computer Entertainment Europe
Aren't you breaking the NDA by confirming its existance and giving us enough information to make an educated guess?
It would seem likely that it's the title that was originally unveiled as "Eight Days". If the demo is anything to go buy the fluidity of it switching between storytelling, scripted events and gameplay is just unbelievable.
I know what it is and non of the games mentioned here is THE ONE... All I could say is that its better then re5 & ff13... Keep guessing :)
Its really funny how the comments are all anti Xbox/microsoft.
Its even funnier that sony have only just decided to step up its game plan to fight back when the console war will step up again when new and more exciting console and inventions come out. Im completely impartial to both console war, but sony have left it a bit late.
Looks like Q3/4 this year may finally be the time to complete the collection of this 'round' of consoles. Taken a while (but always was going to with another new architecture), but looks like Sony will catch up by the end of the year.

Is the 'secret game' a version of Pro Evolution Soccer which has HD graphics and runs smoothly both off-line and on?
I hope its an RPG, im fed up with all the shooting games being launched.
I think this 'secret title' could already be something we know about, its just they are trying to build up the hype in their usual fashion.
In this respect, im thinking God of War 3, Killzone 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4, all of which are going to be sure-fire hits when they are release, Metal Gear especially, as alot of people are waiting for that to come out, among others, before they move to the PS3.
Still, its going to be tough to top 2007. Both the PS3 and 360 had a great line-up last year, but it doesnt seem like its going to stop for 2008!
Like most devs say - the ps3 and 360 are on a par at the technical level, despite the ps3 being slowed down by blurry and poor development tools.
Whatever is going to happen on the ps3 in art direction in 2 years will have already happened on the earlier released platform.
As for people anticipating this or next year to be the ps3's then please go look up some release lists. 2008 is a packed year for exclusives and big titles on both platforms, not just the one or the other.
Final Fantasy VII is about the only thing that will make me switch from 360
Of course it isn't Heavy Rain. You can see initial previews of this title on Gamespot and IGN. If Sony are even unwilling to admit the title's existence I'm guessing you won't find any mention of it anywhere else. The idea of a tactile VR glove sounds intriguing tho.

This all sounds jolly exciting, but why does it mean the downfall of xbox? surely two strong franchises are better than one! i have both so personally cannot wait for all the new stuff. :-)
I bet anything it is God of War 3 what other game do we know out for 2009 unless it's the ultimate game Final Fantasy 7, GOW is known to go from gameplay to cutscene without even noticing the difference really, unless it goes into cg movie. Another one I can think of is either Heavenly sword 2 that has a lot of story telling and hasnt been confirmed yet and also produced in london. or drakes fortune 2 those both had superb graphics and pushed the boundraies of what the PS3 is capable of.

Finally Sony are starting to bare their teeth in this next-gen war.
It can't be God of War 3 as we all know this is coming (can't wait for that one).
It can't be Heavy Rain as we all know about that one and have seen a couple of videos of it.
Can't be Getaway for the same reasons!
It will be intriguing to see what Sony have up their sleeves. Let's just hope it's not another 'authentic' preview like Killzone 2!

the 360 has so much to offer in games I think Sony has run out of ideas you have gears of war which sold more than 3 million copies you have the Halo franchise. Sony had 3 major issues when they relased the PS3 and they were:
1) 15 of the 20 games were already out on 360
2) the relase date of was to long behind the 360
3) the price
Sony love to brag about Blu-ray and that you can get 25gig of data on each disk but they aren't using it all so you then question the point of having blu-ray especially as most of the games are ports from the 360.
Finaly playing ps3 games online hasn't got anything on 360
Thats great, but I'd be more impressed if the PS3 could offer even half the online features of the 360. 1 year after launch and I still have to quit games to read messages, there is no unified friends lists with the ability to easily invite friends to games, and the voice chat is laughable, so much so that nobody bothers to even use voice really.
This combined with Sony's continued lack of support for the European region lead me to believe they are not out of the woods yet. When they can get there heads around a globalized market and start dealing with Europe fairly, then I will take Sony more seriously. Take one look at the PSN store content for the EU in comparison to the US and Asian regions to see how poorly the EU is treat.

Yeh right, the Blu-ray drive in the PS3 is pretty slow at streaming data compaired to the DVD drive in the 360. Why do you think GTA is taking so long to come out. You guessed it, because the drive ain't quick enought. Sure Blu - Ray can hold more but it ain't up to scratch in Data transfer. You can put all the textures you want on the disk, but it'll be like a spectrum and its tape drive.
Also the graphics card in the PS3 isn't up too much.
Still getting one though now that HDDVD has been dropped, LOL
maybe it's uncharted 2 or heavenly sword 2

Despite how many people are crying for a remake of FFVII, I really hope that Sony won't stoop to firing up hype for a game that they released years ago. A new FF game, sure, but I can't see it being a super-secret title, it's not like you couldn't foresee another one coming out... at this point it does seem the most likely idea though.
Note that Darren stressed a step change in what _CONSOLES_ are capable of... thus I'd put my money on it being Crysis.
Helluva lot cheaper than upgrading a PC...

Sony doesn't make all the games hence Sony doesn't have any ideas to run out of.
Again, Sony doesn't make all the games so Sony doesn't have un-used disc space.
These are things that the developers are responsible for, not Sony.
And the point of having 25Gb on a disc is that you CAN'T use it all, ergo games are not limited. Unlike on the 360 where they're now having to put the spill-over of game content online for download or release games on multple discs.
On topic though, I'm hoping for that illusive FFVII remake but I won't hold my breath.
Ah, Sony - masters of hype without substance. I don't think anyone who's really been paying attention this generation will be prepared to take promises at face value; not after the 2x1080p@120hz rubbish, Resistance being trashed by Gears, Giant Enemy Crab and so on.
Still, this should be a better year for them. Lower prices open up the console to those who've been waiting for it but who haven't been following the superior competition from Nintendo or Microsoft. Also, the console seems to have some kind of ridiculous macho image in Iberia and southern Europe that should help.

Cant understand why some people are so concerned about their rival dying a slow and wonderful death, they are both good consoles, one just hasnt been used to it potential yet.
I have a 360 and think xbox live is just the best thing since sliced bread, well worth the yearly fee, compared to ps3's version which is is at best a slight improvement on the original xbox live.
Good ps3 games have been few and far between as well, alot of them already being on the 360.For the ps3 to lose GTA 4 I think is a really big blow, that could have swayed alot of people to buy a console due to it popularity.
The guys at sony really have to pick up their game to compete in my opinion, they need more exclusive games, because the console does have good potential.
Um, #57, the only reason that the PS3 outsold the 360 in America is because the 360 is sold out. Microsoft either has a shortage and is having problems (like the Wii) keeping up with demand, or they're shorting their stock in anticipation of a price drop and the superior version of GTA IV being on the 360.
Either way, the Americans have it right, once again--the 360 is where the future of GAMING is at.
I'm looking forward to this year's PS3 lineup - I think it'll be a Sony Year, but I'm still glad to have a 360 as well. Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 should be awsome and Too Human could be good. Then you got additional content for GTA IV. Don't know about others, but if a game is multi platform, I'll buy it on 360 (usually) as I like Achievements.
Some ludicrous comments on here about the PS3.
PS3 is using about 20% of its capability in current games.
Every serious commentator states that the PS3 is far more powerful than the 360.
Blu Ray drive slow? It's one of the fastest out there as it is ask an independent tester and not some 360/PS3 mag.
The only devs having problems are those who develop 1st for 360 then port to PS3. With the latest middleware releases by Sony the devs doing multi format will develop 1st for PS3 then port to 360.
You just have to check the bleating from the 360 people on here to realise they know they've backed the loser, again.
25gig of data? Try 50 gig actually.
As for the secret game, its not going to be one mentioned already cos we already know about it!
MS have to up the game to match the PS3 so all the xbox crew will be buying new consoles in the next year or three. Backwards compatible? No chance.

I think its funny how sony fanboys react over one game. It just shows they have nothing to play. The 360 is a far superior games console with so many games to choose.

If there was a shortage wouldn't we hear about it before the npd results were in? when I checked they announced shortages a day before npd numbers were announced which gets to my mind that Microsoft saw the results and wanted to make an excuse, sounds....strange. GTA IV will be the same on both consoles except for the downloadable content for the 360 of course but there's a rumor (not confirmed) that Rockstar are going ps3 exclusive after gta iv. As for 360 being the future of gaming, it's not possible. Fact - the 360's format (DVD9) is now limiting games such as GTA IV (Rockstar complained about this issue last year) and also other games aswell, Fact - the 360 has capped it's potential and you will see future games on it virtually the same but they could be small improvements, but the ps3 is only about 30% of it's capabilities so just imagine what the games will be like on the ps3 this year and next.

I find it hilarious with all those "so many games for the 360" yet it got outsold by the ps3 in 2007 the whole year and it was supposed to be the 360's year to destroy the ps3 lol, and you understand that they are many exclusives announced for the ps3 this year too.

Platform wars aside I just really hope it is something with decent co-op play. Resistance had great co-op and made it fun to play two playes in the same room with the same objective. At the other end of the scale - Kane & Lynch. Bad bad Bad!! I like the PS3 because that is what I have but I have nothing against the 360. I think the 14 year old fanboys need to get another hobby if it upsets them this much.
I'd put money on the 'secret game' being either Team Ico's follow-up to Ico/SotC - there's an image floating around the web from the game, but it has not been properly announced as yet - or Heavy Rain.
Anyone hoping for the downfall of the 360/wii is a moron. What happens if the companies drop? It means SONY has a monopoly and doesn't have to do anything to improve their business. Competition is good. We've only gotten this far by standing on the shoulders of giants. We learn, grow and progress with conflict. Grow up and start understanding.

Personally I wish there wasn't so many exclusives on each platform, means i have to fork out for 2 consoles rather than 1. Although most xbox360 "exclusives" do get ported to PC so hopefully I will be able to play them on that.

Ok the ps3 is a more powerful machine than the 360 however after playing COD4 on my mates ps3 and on my 360 I would say that if u are a hardcore gamer then get the 360 every time.(check out Bioshock on one of your mates 360's) The controllers are of a more ergonomic design and your thumbs don't slip off the sticks when they get a bit sweaty during some intense battle coz of the concave design and their in the right place instead of having to stretch your thumbs into the center of the pad like you have to with the Sony pad. I can easily afford to own both and have the latest Sony Bravia so for me the only advantage is the Blu-Ray player and i'm tempted to get one solely for that....but not for the games. Don't get me wrong, most things in my house are sony and I think they're a fantastic company, I just dont understand why there's all this format hate....just get what you want and be happy with it! If u like ps3 then great! if u like 360 then great also...who cares...

First the xbox has very few titles that can be called exclusive because they are also on the PC these days. The graphics chip in the ps3 is a nvidia custom chip, whilst the xbox has an ati chip. Why do Microsoft state on their own PC games (yes the same ones that are on xbox)that nvidia graphics are the best ie NVIDIA THE WAY IT IS MEANT TO BE PLAYED. They are clearly stating the ps3 has the best graphic chip set. This is very insulting to someone that owns an ati graphics card to play 360 exclusives on the PC.
I own a very high spec PC, a ps3 and the Nintendo wii. The PC is a good all rounder, the wii is good for the kids, but after galaxy whats left ? nowt. Then we come to the ps3. The reason I bought a ps3 is simple. I love technology and the ps3 is the only true console out there. I don't want another PC in a box ie the 360, I already have a PC thanks. Sony is the only company that has developed a console and not got off the shelf parts. They spent money on the cell processor, they spent money on blu ray (I'll give you the off the shelf graphics chip)they used bluetooth for the controllers, not like ms with normal wireless, IT IS BLEEDING EDGE TECH and for that reason they deserve a great big slap on the back from everyone who enjoys consoles for pushing the boundaries and putting their money were their mouths are. This was a useless article with little to no investigative journalism at all, topped off with an unverifiable pile of Sony branded posturing. Perhaps you could spend some time researching your subject, and after a few minutes you would find out that Unreal 3 has been a disaster on the PS3, selling scant few copies and already languishing on store shelves. After those first three minutes, you might also discover how inferior multi-platform titles are on the PS3 when compared to the 360, a cheaper, more powerful competitor that you probably should have also researched, but expecting anything so sincere from someone gushing like a PR shill seems unreasonable at best.

#3 & #4: very good mention in GOW3. people (even myself) seem to forget about this game. GOW3 Will be a console buying game if ever i saw one. judging on the first two, those games were ridiculous for the time in terms of what the games achieved in the graphics department, gameplay and storyline, they said themselves that they shouldnt have been able to produce such a game, there is no way that GOW3 is going to be nothing short of a gaming haven. those who have played 1 & 2 cant' not agree with these comments and if you do then i will write you a dissetation as to why those games were pioneers not for there genre but for the whole console.
Therefore this could well be the secret game and so it should be cos the developers will make a truly unique gaming experience again, SIXAXIS, bluray, extreme processing power, its the recipee of the gods (sorry). these guys dont mess about, they know how to make games and rightly holding off till 2009, they knew from GOW1 what they were doing and paving the way for a GOW3 PS3 union.

I'm a PC gamer, because it spanks all the consoles (and macs).
I regularly use my friends Xbox's, Wii's, PS3's, and if I were going to buy one, I'd get an Xbox. Why?
Because everything I see about the PS3 is in the future tense. Its media bull. I want a machine that leads the way now, not one that claims might lead be one day.
Sony keep talking about the power of the PS3, but the games don't show it, and the PS3 is no longer new. Its old technology.
The xbox graphics look the same, I don't need Blu ray when downloads and on demand HD is already here, and the Wii has a much better user experience.
I think the future lies with an HD Wii and the Xbox 3. Online and streaming is taking over and in 18 months time, the PS3 will look like an over priced paperweight.
The PS3 is the Mac Air of gaming. Nothing new, being talked up and over priced. Nice idea. Badly executed.

360 pros: has more advanced GPU, higher memory bandwidth (5x that of PS3), more flexible CPU, easier to use Dev tools, better online experience, better pads, better current range of games
ps3 pros: potentially a CPU with higher workrate, more storage for data, better build quality, quieter operation, plays bluray vids, some decent games on their way
As a 360 owner I'm very happy with it. I've had no RROD yet.
One day I might get a PS3 too, as I've had both the PS1 and PS2 before and been happy with them also.
Now, if only either company would offer keyboard and mouse support for FPS games....it just feels so much better to play games that way!

Please let it be Shadow of the Colossus 2. Then my PS3 will actually get some gaming use. Apart from Uncharted i've been pretty disappointed with the PS3's line up so far, and am not overly excited by anything to come.
For me2 (post 96) - the PS3 already supports standard USB mice and keyboards, the game developers need to choose to allow their use. At the moment, Unreal Tournament 3 is the only game I know which does.
no one has mentioned FFXIII i think that it might be that but i do not know i haven't got one although i will be getting one soon and that means that i will have the Wii Xbox 360 and the PS3 and i think that the PS3 is slightly better.
Oh yawn, more about sony. Please, I don't want one. Its cool that they're making games and things, but after a hands on play of both consoles I'd only ever want to buy an xbox. It doens't matter what games they release from now I highly doubt I'll be spending my cash on a PS3.
I don't see how this article justifies Sony bouncing back. As pointed out by others, both xbox and sony have their own exclusives. I dispute the neutrality of this article. The result is: people who have bought a PS3, be happy, there are new games on the way for you. Xbox, be happy, you have lots of new exclusives. The title of the article is loaded and I appreciate reading the more neutral articles on the 'console war'.
I would personally love to see Xbox and Sony to flourish and stay in healthy competition. It is important to me that the hardware is cheap, especially if I'm spending a fortune on the software. By keeping these two giants competing it will ensure competitive prices.
I respect what sony have done and the money they have invested in the development of the PS3. I fear however that Microsoft understand that gamers are impatient. They are in a position now where they could release the new xbox tomorrow with a new gfx card and new processor and be no1 again. (until it breaks). I don't know whether Sony can afford another development drive like this last one until they have another format like bluray that they want to force on us.
I own an elite at the minute and the only reason I do is because the games are here now. I will definately buy a PS3 in the future (especially when Fumito Ueda releases his new team ICO game).
I cannot understand how people have rushed out and bought either console at launch. I really still cannot justify the purchase of a PS3 "yet".
why would I want to pay a premium to have the console waiting under the tv, when I could wait and purchase it cheaper when it is ready?
I remember when Sony PR people last talked about "in-game" graphics just before the PS3 was launched, only to find that the demo's shown were not from PS3 hardware and had to be toned down for the PS3.

Ok, i understand the difference between PS3 and the 360..... the difference is the people owning and playing these consoles day in day out, i admit i am a die hard 360 fan and WILL never buy a PS3 for the simple reason being " if it aint broke don't fix it".
I owned a PS1 and a PS2 but when the black xbox came thats when i switched and will never go back regardless. Gameplay is superb excellent choices of games even on single player, online? well my name is my gamertag so look me up sometime and we'll play some but it is why i am happy to fork out my 拢30-拢40 a year for XB Live because it is fantastic.
I Can relate to the PS3 gamers as true die hard Sony fans, im not a great fan of MS but the machine, i won't ever do without. they are similiar graphics are the same but 360 just at the moment has a better range of games, Sony's time will come though and those patient people out there waiting for better games and a better online community it will happen i'm sure.
360 and Xbox is not going anywhere fast and both consoles are here to stay.

what are you talking about? GTA5 out tomorrow?!?! shall we get GTA4 out the way first and usually developers work up until the very last day before releasing a game, they're not waiting around for a release date to become available. also GTA4 not 5 is out on the same day in America as it is in the UK.

the mystery game, as mentioned in the srticle has not been officially announced, so it won't be Heavy Rain (animation tests online already) God of War 3 (announced in 2006(!!) as a PS3 title) Final Fantasy (too obvious), i'm gonna say its a brand new title and looks like the viral marketing has already started.

On average, the Blu-ray 2x drive in the PS3 is slower than the DVD 12x drive in the 360. This is a fact confirmed by devs (again, the people who's opinions matter). For example;

It looks certain that by the end of this gen, both Nintendo and MS would have succeeded in increasing their market share over Sony (who dominated the last two gens). Halo did not set the standard for the FPS. Socom did. It was also the game that made the PS2 the success it was.

It's going to be a game that utilizes the PS3 Eye and Six Axis/Dual shock 3. You will be able to dodge/duck and jump using body motion and the controller will do various things, it's going to be crazy!!
$1000 says it's Eight Days. first of all, he revealed it's a SCEE London title, which leaves The Getaway 3, Eight Days, Home, and Singstar (or new IP). Anyway, look at this link. Hmm, Eight Days. The "step up the consoles for immersion/story telling" sounds like most of the things he listed on this link.

Sony definitely has made smart decisions in the last few years with incorporating the Blu-ray player in their PS3. It will attract both gamers and the normal person who just wants a high-def dvd player. The PS3 should make huge gains this year and have a good battle with the Xbox and Wii.

ff7 wouldnt surprise me as square have frequently re-released the majoirty of its games (final fantasy anniversary edition on psp for exmaple) but have yet to re release its biggest ff titles from the older consoles, ffs 7 and 8. Whilst eight is still just a rumour on the internet, square have made a 7 trailer to demonstrate the ps3s abilities. added to that there is the fact that square are heading towards the end of an ff7 revival, with crisis core on psp being the last announced title to be released. what better way to end a revival than with a remake of the original great title?
All these are good guesses, but they're going to be wrong.
An NDA is not going to be in place for games that have already been shown or announced.
1. Heavy Rain has been shown.
2. God of War 3 has been announced.
3. Final Fantasy VII is not being worked on by Studio Liverpool, it would be Square Enix and we have nothing on that bar the intro they made on PS3 hardware. A third party title is unlikely.
4. Eight Days is unlikely as it was shown.
5. Ico 3 was hinted at on their official website.

Davser, it's a throw away comment and meaningless. It's based on the idea that only about 20% usage was being made of Cell's SPEs for their games at the time. However, games are not just about the CPU, they use the GPU as well, for which RSX is really being pushed on the PS3.
Besides, this is what one of the best devs (Naughty Dog) on the PS2 and PS3 had to say about claims of how much power people claim they are using on a console (the PS2 back then);
"...Any developer who gives you a 'percent of system used' answer is blowing smoke..."
So there you have it, EA (and a few others) are 'blowing smoke'. ;)
Regarding Blu-ray, load times are LONGER for Blu-ray because the drive is slower than the 360's DVD drive. This is a know fact (you can work it out for yourself from the data transfer rate shown on www.blu-ray.com/faq - Multiply by 2 for PS3's BR, and by 12 for 360's DVD). That is why more and more PS3 games are dumping 4-5GB of data onto the HDD to improve the load times.

That doesn't really make any sense. It's still very tough to fill up a DVD9 with just 3D data, textures and audio. Both of the two multi-disc games released on Xbox360 (Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon) are traditional JRPG's containing hours of HD video cut-scenes.
BluRay really has no affect at all on graphics and gameplay. The thing is, Xbox360 and PS3 both have just 512MB of RAM in total, though Xbox360 has a little more available owing to smaller OS and framebuffer footprints. RAM is one of the biggest constraints to fancier visuals this generation because everything on-screen and around you has to already be loaded up. It's no use it being on BluRay or a HDD if it can't fit into the available RAM.
PS3 might have a very slight edge in the end, but most developers will tell you that these two systems are closer than any two before them. I鈥檝e no doubt you鈥檒l see comparable visuals on both throughout this console generation.

Both the 360 and PS3 are superb consoles, but due to the 2005 E3 hype for the PS3 (pre-rendered Killzone/Motorstorm trailers, 2 TFLOPs vs 1 TFLOP nonsense, Blu-ray vs DVD for capacity but not speed etc), many gamers today and certain journalists still have a distorted view of the PS3's superiority over the 360.
They think there's a massive power difference which will suddenly show itself in the future and make all kinds of excuses for why we are not seeing it today (like all the talk of untapped power in the Ps2 last gen) when in fact the power difference between both consoles is minor.
I know certain PS3 fans don't like to accept this because they *want* to believe the PS3 is more than it really is (even a supercomputer to some). But it's just a games console, no better or worse than the 360. :)
