Because people in Britain are forced to pay for a service on pain of imprisonment that is meant to be impartial but frequently fails the test. It's an issue of consumer choice and in Britain there's none when it comes to television.

Public broadcasters are always an easy target, because any questions about a public broadcaster's programming, and in particular, its journalism, lead to the question as to whether public funding should continue.

The tactic adopted by Fox News is to purport to occupy the centre-ground so that any news outlet or critic that does not share its right-wing agenda is deemed to be "librul left".

For all its faults, I have yet to find a better news broadcaster than the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú. In particular, the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú stands head and shoulders above US broadcasters. Broadcast news and profit-making do not mix.

I didn't see Andrew Marr's programme, but I can imagine what it was like from reading Pollard's review. The thing is, the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú tries to get a balance of opinions for any of its political discussions. Maybe the panel assembled came across as unamously anti-Israel because it's hard to find anytone who can string a sentence together who wholeheartedly supports the Israeli government. It's quite a minority view in this country, after all.
I very much like how the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú has moved away from following the Bush/Blair line in the past few years and has recognised the importance of the United Nations. As a World broadcaster (although funded entirely by British taxpayers), I think it's wonderful that the Beeb gives as much time to the supporters of the UN as they do supporters of the US.
