XONY: Eoin Colfer on writing fantasy for children
This film is the first in a series I will be posting on Gomp/arts that will feature a wide range of arts figures including writers, musicians, directors, performers and artists giving advice about a specific aspect of their work.

I'm genuinely pleased that this video came about, just a bit of a shame it wasn't better scripted. Perhaps it would be more suited to CÂ鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú/Newsround? That isn't to denigrate the quality of the man's writing, just an observation, really. Clearly Eoin is a huge success and rightly so, perhaps it all needs a bit more polish.

It still doesn't, in fact, and I'm looking forward to the next one. In a few years time my niece will be old enough for me to start reading them to her. True, she's more likely to want to be Holly than Artemis, but that's no reason she can't enjoy them.
Custador @ 1, it may surprise you to know that not everyone liked Douglas Adams' original trilogy in five parts. Give me one of Iain M Banks' Culture novels any day of the week. Chances are if you're old enough to read Hitch-Hiker's Guide then you're not in the target demographic for Artemis Fowl anyway ;-)

And let's not forget that Douglas Adams delivered plenty of insults to the series himself, not least the last couple of books he wrote for it...

Because of it I read an Artemis Fowl and won't rule out reading another - I like to chop and change.

Iain M Banks is wonderful, I agree.
@ John Self (5):
I liked all of the original five, but I agree that the sixth never have been allowed. Considering the finality with which Adams ended the fifth book, I think it was pretty clear that he didn't want a sixth.
