This week I recorded an interview with a couple who split up because of his addiction to internet pornography.
They are both 5 live listeners and contacted me because they wanted people to know what a massive impact this kind of addiction has.
Daniel and Sandra don't leave out any grim detail of what it's done to them both: how she discovered what he was doing, how she tried to embrace it, how she and then he both realised it was much more than something 'natural'. They are unbelievably honest.
We played the interview on the programme and asked listeners whether they thought internet pornography was too easily accessible.

Internet addiction is a huge problem. It is in other areas too like gambling and I have a family member addicted to gambling online. The problem with internet pornography is that before people had to go out and buy and be seen to buy porn but now they can look anytime they want for free without anyone knowing and it has taken in some people who wouldn't before have thought to look. I suppose anything that ives one pleasure and a kind of thrilling stress is always going to be addictive.

A study has found that viewing pornography is harmful to the viewer and society. In a meta-analysis (a statistical integration of all existing scientific data), researchers have found that using pornographic materials leads to several behavioral, psychological and social problems.
CALGARY, March 12, 2002 -
One of the most common psychological problems is a deviant attitude towards intimate relationships such as perceptions of sexual dominance, submissiveness, sex role stereotyping or viewing persons as sexual objects. Behavioral problems include fetishes and excessive or ritualistic masturbation. Sexual aggressiveness, sexually hostile and violent behaviours are social problems as well as individual problems that are linked to pornography.
Findings are Alarming"; 12,000 Participants in Study
"Our findings are very alarming", said Dr. Claudio Violato one of the co-authors of the study. Dr. Violato, Director of Research at the National Foundation for Family Research and Education (NFFRE) and a professor at the University of Calgary, said "This is a very serious social problem since pornography is so widespread nowadays and easily accessible on the internet, television, videos and print materials".
Question - people (especially men) are saying that pornography doesnt effect them, but how is this measurable, are they able to analyse themselves objectively, why not subject themselves to a more scientific basis.

I've only hit a woman once in my life but what hurt more was what I said to them and even them I aplogised and promised to buy them a stout which they accepted ironically it was there addiction to all things erotic that lead to the situation...
We have some of the worst rates of teenage pregnancy in this country and mental illness...
I do draw the line with certian things so in that respect I am not a liberal...

No, but seriously I think on this issue I think the history of it can bring so much pain not only for the consumer but for the prostituted too so I think with me there are things to be alarmed about and sadly it seems for others there are even greater dangers...
I was incensed driving to work today listening to the comments from the callers regarding pornography. The programme was dominated by men's views. Up until 10am, all the callers barr one were men. What struck me most was their self-centered, self-obsessed attitude towards pornography. All but one of them failed to acknowledge the harmful effects pornography has on women in terms of it objectifying and demeaning women. The callers who were in favour of porn overwhelmingly cited women as the problem. As such, they are demonstrating porn's potentially harmful effects through attitudes and ideology that sanctions the domination and coercion of women.

Pornography did we ever talk about it before the dreaded word INTERNET no i dont think so.Porn has been around since way back when and i remember Lady's Chatterley Lover causing a stir some time ago. What is needed now is EDUCATION.Parents must teach children about ponography in the facts of life times have changed and if the internet becomes a big part of life education must move on.It wont go away there is nothing wrong with porn if you can balance real life and perhaps a utopian perspective as long as your not harming anybody.Your program dealt mainly with mens addiction does this mean women are a rare breed and dont like it i do hear women having a chuckle now and again.When marriages suffer their must have been something wrong in the first place.Finally it shouldn't be a taboo subject because like Sex Cancer and Drugs the more we know the more we educate ourselves to what will happen in the future
Sandra and I did this interview to highlight the potentially damaging effects of Internet pornography on young minds. My own story is an illustration of that. Every serious relationship I ever had failed because of my porn addiction. For me personally, thats pretty clear evidence. I was exposed to hardcore pornographic videos at the age of 12 and I feel that corrupted my view of women, relationships and sex for a good part of my life. Thankfully I'm well on the road to recovery now. Both Sandra and I believe that all adults have the right to view pornography if they wish. Minors are a different story though. We protect children from exposure to alcohol, drugs and gambling but do they know the danger that arrives in the family home silently along a piece of wire?
