Meeting My Hero Waddle in K-Town

celina_hinchcliffe2.gif HEIDELBERG - They say never meet your heroes because they will only disappoint you. Well when I saw him shimmy out of the commentary box after the Italy USA game, I knew that wasn't going to be the case.

Chris Waddle hadn't lost his touch.

My Sheffield Wednesday hero was utterly charming. We chatted about the fiery encounter we'd just witnessed. What a match.

Kaiserslautern boasts the second largest American community outside the States. There is a huge US air base here. and county and last night they turned the sold-out Fritz Walter Stadium into the Soccerbowl.

I'd been chatting to the fans at Sam Kullmans Diner nearby earlier on. The manager there Jeff makes a mean burger, pop in if you're in town.

The were quite embarassed by some of the US TV coverage and the commentary. I found it mildly amusing listening to one of their commentators talk about a 'one-on-one offense situation' and 'head shots'.

Even the is a giggle.

I like "head shots". It makes the football sound like it's taking place in a modelling agency.

I have an interesting theory about the American and Australian teams. As long as the people there do not learn to sya the word 'football' instead of 'soccer' for this most popualr game in the world, their national teams will remain in the third category in world football. How can you excel when you do not want to say the name of the game correctly.

There are 3 pairs of US commentators. The ones you heard yesterday are simply awful. I tried to get the Five Alive broadcast one day when those donkeys were on and found out to my chagrin that the broadcast was for the UK only.

One pair (Adrian Healey & Tommy "Bulge the old onion bag" Smith) are rather good.

The TV coverage here in the US is embarrassingly awful. They try to dumb it down for the newly initiated or prospective fans who are probably not tuned in to begin with! They try to sensationalize every game by building a "story" around it. Annoying pop-ups interfere with the view every few seconds giving nuggets of useless information.

This year's coverage by ESPN/ABC is substantially better than the past couple of World Cup's. They are getting better as the interest level in football continues to grow. The 麻豆官网首页入口 coverage is definitely better but if you live in the US, this is the only option unless you understand Spanish and tune to Univision's broadcast.

I have a question for Celina. You are decribed as a 'Match of the Day reporter', yet your only reference to the Italy-USA match (the most dramatic so far) concerned Chris Waddle. Do you have any interest in what happens on the field of play?

I met my hero a few years back, a fellow left-wing maestro, Ryan Giggs. I don't think I made any eye contact with him the entire time!

Ten out of ten to the Korean fans tonight, I thought they were amazing. I know this is a cliche, but they were easily Korea's twelfth man.

I've been in the US for the last ten days (poor planning on the part of a conference organiser that) and agree that the ABC/ESPN coverage is pretty appalling, but at least they're showing it this time!

The other thing to comment on is Fox's coverage at the start of the competition. Of course they focussed on the few idiots who decided to fight, and you should have heard the anchor questioning the sports guy (stuff along the lines of the competitions only just started, how much worse will it get?), thankfully the sports guy was embarrased enough to say there had only really been the one small incident. Since then Fox haven't mentioned the world cup, wonder why?

I agree with #11 - Celina certainly does know her football and to be fair, I know who I'd rather be watching out of Celina and Adrian Chiles (no disrespect to Mr. Chiles)!

Who cares what announcers say? On nearly every World Cup broadcast on ABC, there's a professional announcer, some with years of football experience, along with players who have actually played football in the World Cup. I can't believe I'm defending a television company, but please, the English, 'Boston United goals' was honestly never funny, and especially won't be funny once America starts putting stronger teams than even England on the pitch. Maybe then you'll realize it doesn't matter what they say on the 'telly'.

I was a little disappointed about ESPN's coverage of the opening match. Not only did they completely ignore the opening cermony. They also left out the national anthems and did not even show the lineups. And instead they interviewed two unknown european sumo wrestlers and had one of them fight the interviewer. Does that really bring so much more viewers?

Bless! You're one up on me Celina. I was lucky enough to be spending my sandwich year from University in Marseille (1990-1991) while Chris was playing for OM. I saw him on a number of occasions either at the stadium or at the airport (we seemed to be on several flights going to and from the UK) but I never plucked up the courage to go and say hello as a nervous and bashful 21 year old. He was absolutely tremendous for OM during that epoch and I believe he carried that form over to the Owls upon his return to the UK.
