All fantastic choices but where's the Smashing Pumpkins (Siamese Dream), Verve (Urban Hymns) and Beatles (Any)????

These are going to be great shows! I can't wait though for the Pearl Jam "Ten" masterpiece show!

Can't believe you've not gone for Master of Puppets - that was the definitive album for the whole genre, not just for Metallica. Not mixed for FM (or DAB) radio play though, unlike the black album - any chance that influenced your choice?

The Black Album is as dull and boring as this blog and even more disappointing.

Master of the Puppets has the greatest bass playing and And Justice is a non stop onslaught. The Black Album is soulless and Bon Jovified; actually judging by your uncharacteristic bad taste, I wouldn鈥檛 be surprised to see Slippery When Wet on the spring 2010 Zane Lowe's Masterpieces list, alongside Poison's Open Up And Say...Ahh!. and MC Hammer鈥檚 1990 ground breaking 鈥淧lease Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em鈥

The Black album was like catching my dad dancing around in my mum鈥檚 favorite dress, singing along to the Grease mega mix. I鈥檝e never been able to look at him since.

Zane get some taste again man 鈥 One Hot Minute by the Chilis would work nicely.

the streets though? seriously? what on earth are you thinking?
its not even good, and yet its being called a masterpiece...seems like its another panel chosen list this time round, with some on the panel not seeing too clearly about what is a classic.
Then again judging from some of the other albums featured by the "masterpiece" collection im not surprised at all.
Mediocre is still mediocre and rubbish is still rubbish, regardless of how many people claim its amazing( im looking at the artic monkeys and killers for the rubbish)
you cannot polish a turd, no matter how hard you try... and the streets' body of work is nothing more than that.

jester1984 you don't happen to write the music review for the sunday times by any chance?? because like them, it appears that you think your opinion is better than everyone else's. if you could qualify your thoughts with some valid points you might get somewhere. i hope you are not one of the army of people who 'love' a band whilst they are unheard of and then disown them when they actually make it to the wider audience.

When I heard Daft Punk were chosen for this I thought it was going to be their debut 'Homework', because it was so influential and is basically a classic... I think that it is more of a masterpiece than 'Discovery'.

A great way to start the week of masterpieces with the opening cords of Enter Sandman. Ok so the black album may not have been as influential to the thrash metal genre as Master Of Puppets (which would have been my choice of a masterpiece album) but it did bring metal to the masses with sales over 15 million worldwide and elevated Metallica to the stadium status of Bon Jovi and Motley Crue at the time of its release, exposing more people to the, in my opinion better, first four albums. For me it relegated Slippery When Wet and New Jersey by Bon Jovi to the bottom of my cd rack! In over 20 years of going to arena/stadium gigs Metallica are the best live band i have seen and had it not been for the black album i may not have been fortunate enough to go to see them play. I cant wait for Monday and 2 hours of Metallica on Radio 1!

A suggestion for a masterpiece album next year is Rocks by Aerosmith, an album quoted by the likes of James Hetfield and Slash as the reason they learnt to play guitar and an album that has been a massive influence on rock music in general since the 70's.

    ZANE LOWE -
    "Masterpieces" ??
The only masterpiece in there is London Calling. I mean come on, Streets and Daft Punk compared to The Clash?? I wouldn't say those albums are masterpieces. I think you should of had Sgt Peppers, Are you experienced, After the Gold Rush, and London Calling. Now they are masterpieces. Zane is rubbish. I miss John Peel :(

It鈥檚 great to a collection of albums spread across the whole musical spectrum. From reading some of the previous blogs a see there is not much love for the Daft Punk鈥檚 Discovery album to be classed as a master piece, but I think once you鈥檝e listen to how this album was put together and how each track has been individually selected for the album and the story that is told from the first to the last track you should begin to understand and appreciate why this album has been selected.

Even if you are not a big Electro fan, to understand how Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter started with an old disco tune then turned it into something so different yet still maintaining something from the original track is genius.

I think the unconvinced should listen on Thursday, then make your opinion on this choice as I believe and hope that a large percentage will change the way they view this album and appreciate it as a master piece.

I have to concur with a few of the other respondents surprise at the inclusion of The Streets - Original Pirate Material. Its place in this group is surprising but when compared to all of the previous Masterpiece entries its addition just screams of the desperation to include works from a specific genre and not actual Masterpieces.

I love Masterpieces, the shows are great the insight into the albums is fun but no way The Streets can sit next to It Takes a Nation of Millions or The Prodigy and as for the rock albums that are here, all great but GnR, Metallica and all the others are here because AC/DC came first and you haven't done Back in Black or Highway to Hell and they are both Masterpieces.

Nice to see Daft Punk being recognised amongst some pretty special bands & talented producers for what they are & what they have done, without Thomas & Guy Manuel, I dont think that dance music would be around today. I reckon that although 'Discovery' is a fantastic album, and definately their best musically, you have picked the wrong Daft Punk album. 'Homework' not only brought Daft Punk to the fore as cutting edge music producers, but also changed the way dance music is produced. It saved house music from certain death & changed the face of all genres of electronic music forever. You can still hear the heavy influences from that album in the majority of modern electronic pop bands tracks, and whenever I listen back to the album, the more popular tracks like 'Around The World' and 'Da Funk' still sound new, 'Rollin & Scratchin' would fit in most DJ's sets in clubs, as would 'Burnin' & 'Alive'. Whichever album you go for, they are both masterpeices... 'Homework' more so than 'Discovery' in my opinion!!!

  • Comment number 14.

Well, I'd always considered Homework to be their materpiece but I was caught out when that organ track came on, then the beats..... I had to sit in my car with the engine running to hear it out, that was a great moment!

Cool choice - from a slightly over excitable DJ :O)

i would say that justice for all is metallica's best album, but what the black album did for them was incredible, and for the genre too.

I was disappointed not to see siamese dream on the list, one of my favourite albums of all time and i know its one of yours too zane!

Maybe some deftones next time, or sabbath! meanwhile im waiting for the daft punk show to be on iplayer as i missed the show and love the album.

Julian Casablancas; He from The Strokes, has hit us with a bit of a curve ball here...I honestly wasn't expecting a solo album from the man any time soon. But, low and behold here it is. Called 'Phrazes For The Young' - It is by all accounts a rather electronic effort, but judging from first single Eleventh Dimension, it's a good one. Still want a Strokes record though. They are ready to record apparently. In the meantime, enjoy. AMD AND
