Complaint
The programme included a report on the treatment by French police of Liverpool fans attending the UEFA Champion鈥檚 League final in Paris.聽 A viewer complained that, as well as showing footage of events outside the stadium, it also included footage of interaction between Spanish police and Real Madrid fans on another occasion which was not identified as such.聽 The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 麻豆官网首页入口鈥檚 editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
As could have been deduced from certain features of the footage in question, it was indeed of a different occasion, and it had been included as a result of an oversight.聽 The 麻豆官网首页入口鈥檚 Editorial Guidelines, however, call for 鈥渄ue鈥, rather than absolute, accuracy, which means that some errors, when considered in context, do not amount to a material breach of editorial standards.聽 In this instance, the ECU saw nothing in the erroneously included footage which would have reflected adversely on Liverpool supporters or any other parties involved in the events in Paris if viewers had taken it to have depicted those events, or which would have given viewers a misleading impression of the matter being reported on.聽 In the ECU鈥檚 judgement its inclusion, though a matter of regret, was effectively inconsequential in terms of the impression given by the report, and did not represent a breach of the 麻豆官网首页入口鈥檚 standards of due accuracy.
