Complaint
A visitor to the Bitesize pages which deal with Caribbean migration to the UK and the Windrush Generation raised three issues about the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 3 pages:
- it was inaccurate to say 500,000 people migrated from the Caribbean to the UK between 1948 and 1971;
- the Windrush Generation was inaccurately defined in terms of migration between those dates, whereas it properly applied only to those arriving on the Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948;
- the use of the term Windrush Generation has divided the Caribbean community in the UK because it does not recognise Indian-Caribbean and Chinese-Caribbean immigrants.
Subsequently, in correspondence with the ECU the complainant added that it was inaccurate to say Claudia Jones had started the Notting Hill Carnival in 1966.聽 The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 麻豆官网首页入口鈥檚 editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
On the first point, neither the ECU nor the Bitesize team could identify an authoritative source for the 500,000 figure, and this aspect of the complaint was upheld.聽 On the second point, while the ECU understood the complainant鈥檚 reasons for construing the term in the more limited sense, it noted numerous published references to the Windrush Generation as applying to Caribbean migration to the UK over a longer period, and did not consider the pages to be inaccurate in using the term in that sense.聽 On the third point, the ECU recognised that the term did not acknowledge Caribbean migrants of Indian or Chinese ethnicity, but considered this represented a level of detail not to be expected in pages aimed at primary school or younger secondary school children and found the unqualified use of the term duly accurate in these contexts.聽
In relation to Claudia Jones, the ECU agreed it was inaccurate to say Claudia Jones started the Notting Hill Carnival in 1966, it being more accurate to say she started an event to celebrate Caribbean culture in 1959 from which the Notting Hill Carnival later developed.聽 However, as the Bitesize team made appropriate amendments at the first opportunity after being made aware of the inaccuracy, the ECU regarded this aspect of the complaint as having been resolved.
