A local walkers' guide-book by Richard Washer has re-traced a series of old footpath routes around Leamington.

The book, called In the Footsteps of the Edwardians, is based on a much earlier booklet which was printed in Edwardian times and described 15 walks around Leamington.

Richard traced these original 15 Edwardian footpaths and reproduced the routes in this new book, with updated maps and descriptions.

The book notes changes to the paths and recounts the fascinating memories of old Leamingtonians.

The guide includes points of interest and stories associated with places along the way, giving historical details, literary conections and local legends.

The book is illustrated with beautiful black and white photographs from the early 1900s, some of which you can see here.

Print off two walk maps

We have chosen two of the routes, so you can print off the details and sample the walks for yourself.

Click the images button below to launch two of the walk maps.

You can choose your map and print it out, so you can follow in Edwardian footsteps.

We have only put two of the maps online, to give you a taste.

The two routes we have chosen as examples are outlined below.

Walk 5

Leamington walks
School Hill, Offchurch, taken around 1904
Radford to Fosse Road.

A four-mile walk, starting on Lewis Road at the Baptist Chapel at the bottom of Radford.

The map shows the circuit as a dotted line.

This goes into the coutryside from Radford, alongside Valley Farm, by Cown Hill and all the way to Lower Fosse Farm. There are a couple of options for the return, either over Crown Hill or by Pounce Hill Farm.

There are also a number of alternatives for shortening the route, all of these are shown on the map.

Walk 13

A butterfly, one of the delights you might see on your walk
Milverton Hill to Guy's Cliffe.

Again, this route is shown on the map as a dotted line, starting at the school on Guy's Cliffe Avenue.

The route then goes from Portland Place, via Manor Farm and the church, to the Saxon mill.

From Guy's Cliffe Mill, follow the the embankment towards Blacklow Hill until you see the Gaveston Monument.

Return is by the same route, or by the angler's path along the river Avon and across a field back to Old Milverton Road and under the railway.

Additional route information

Leamington walks
Queen street, Cubbington, taken around 1904
The book also helps with navigation, with details of the route and historic information along the way, but these maps will at least suggest a day out to you.

Of course, you should also carry an OS or walkers' map of the area when you go exploring.

In total, the book has traced 15 walks and has details and maps for each of them.

Buy a copy

The book is light-weight, with just 36 A5 size pages, making it ideal to carry with you as you walk.

If you would like to buy a copy of Footsteps of the Edwardians, it is available from South Warwickshire Tourist Board and Portland Books in Leamington.
