Crossing boundaries
 As an artist I find myself torn between fine art and graphic illustration. This epic struggle manifests itself through various subject matters, styles and methods of working.

She said her work crosses boundaries, which can be as frustrating as it is exciting.
She said: "As an artist I find myself torn between fine art and graphic illustration.
"This epic struggle manifests itself through various subject matters, styles and methods of working.
I feel this struggle will never be resolved and it is quite nice to be able to work across various areas, although at times it can be frustrating because I want to do everything!"
Books, comics, ads and fantasy

The illustrative side of Claire's work is produced through paint, print or textiles and is highly influenced by book jacket illustrations, comic books, advertising and childhood fantasy.
Although looking trivial at first glance, these images are highly personal, exploring self, psyche and imagination.
They are linked to secret narratives, old world mythology, archetypal imagery and science fiction. Because of their personal nature, Claire said she was very shy about showing the work.
She said: "These works are made purely for me and I won't reveal their stories even when asked about them, to some extent I am reluctant to exhibit them."

A basic need to paint

Claire says her interest in visual work resulted from what she calls "a basic need to paint".
She is fascinated by abstraction and uses colour and texture as a means of expression, although she still uses a controlled style, sometimes being ordered like cubes or tiles.
The work brings together spirituality and science fiction, using ritualistic and obsessive painting methods to reflect the subject matter.
Claire has described this bringing together of elements as " a subtle form of alchemy".
Describing her techniques she said: "Surfaces are built up then abraded with sandpaper and repainted. I never know what is going to happen because the surface is in constant flux."
