Form and meaning

Tranquility by Sarah Louise Hodkinson
Tranquility by Sarah Louise Hodkinson
Talking about her photographs, Sarah said: "My work explores ways in which photographic techniques (such as colour, tone, focus etc) can suggest meaning and affect emotional reaction to an image. I am also interested in the use of metaphor and symbol, both in the subject photographed and the photographic technique employed."

In the most literal way, these works start from very simple beginnings. Sarah's ideas develop from the most ordinary and everyday experiences, as she describes: "...my inspiration comes initially from personal observations of the world and people around me, which often lead to work based on theories of philosophy, psychology and religion."

As if to prove the extent of this journey, Sarah has even used such basic things as markings on pavements to make work. She said: "I have found hidden narratives in everyday settings including in markings and objects on the tarmac of the street where I live."

Sarah also takes inspiration from photographers such as Thomas Joshua Cooper, John Blakemore, Frederick Sommer and Ralph Eugene Meatyard, and painters such as J.M.W.Turner and Mark Rothko.

Recently, Sarah has used photography to portray emotions and moods with specific techniques and symbolic subject matter. In this, her work on the vastness and details of the world is particularly impressive.

She said: "I have explored the concept of the microcosm and the macrocosm, comparing the vast hillsides of the peak district with minute detail of mosses and lichens on trees and rocks."
