| | Linda Crouch was one of several adult learners to take part in a pioneering adult learning scheme at the Rathbone Training Centre in Coventry and as well as gaining the first qualifications in her life, she managed to get a job for the first time.
Linda, 42, from Hillfields was one of 13 people to complete the Basic Employability course, which includes a City and Guilds certificate in literacy and numeracy.
The course, funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) Coventry and Warwickshire, saw learners spend 20 weeks at the centre and average 30 hours a week learning a range of new skills, from time and money management to speaking, listening, reading and writing.
During the course, Linda and fellow learner, Violet Smart, 54, gained six weeks work experience at the Victoria Manor Nursing Home in Coventry,
The pair impressed manager Lorna Weston so much during their placement at the home that they were offered full-time posts.
She said: "The Basic Employability course is an ideal way to gain the basic knowledge and practical experience needed to gain employment and since they joined us, Linda and Violet have made tremendous progress and are extremely confident in their roles."
The adult learners and everyone who helped on the courses gathered together recently for a certificate presentation and general celebration of their achievements.
听Speaking at the presentation, learning manager at the LSC, Rachel Lewis-Bell, said: "It's terrific that people here have taken the bold step to change their lives through learning.
"Gaining these skills can unlock a world of new opportunities in both a working and social environment.
"It is especially rewarding to discover that for most of the learners it's the first formal qualification they have ever received and that for some it can lead to immediate employment opportunities."

Rathbone training adviser, Rosemary Browne-Marke, added: "Linda is a great role model to anyone who admits to themselves they have basic skills needs and then takes positive steps to change and make a difference in their life.
"She is now able to process all her banking papers and utilise the literacy skills gained on the course within her first employed role at a local care home."
People who join the 'Basic Employability' course are either referred from Job Centre Plus (formerly the Employment Service) or through word of mouth recommendations.
The course takes place throughout the year at Rathbone on a rolling basis, and people who would like to join can contact Rosemary Browne-Marke on 024 7655 0736.
