The aid agency's work
Based in Church Street, Leamington CORD have been working in both the north and south of Afghanistan for two years, supplying clothes and food, helping to build irrigation systems and teaching and training local people in medicine and first aid.

They succeeded in keeping their offices open throughout the rule of the Taliban and also during the allied bombing.

Coventry born and bred district reporter Anna travelled with the aid agency to see how money donated by the people of Warwickshire and the West Midlands had been spent.

She said: "It was the opportunity of a lifetime that I couldn't miss out on. We visited projects run by CORD, from agriculture - where they've developed an orchard in the middle of the desert which is flourishing for the first time - to a shelter project where people are encouraged to build their own window and door frames, and make their houses out of mud.

"Afghanistan is a developing country that lacks all the basics. There are no permanent electricity supplies, everything runs off generators which often fail, clean water is in short supply and they're now into their 5th year of drought with crops failing again.

"People are incredibly poor but many who have been helped by CORD's aid projects have such positive attitudes towards rebuilding the country. Despite everything, they want to rebuild Afghanistan and most importantly they want the West not to forget them and to help."

September 11 in Afghanistan
Anna was in Afghanistan on September 11, a year on from the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers in New York. She reported live to 麻豆官网首页入口 WM from Kabul on the day, reflecting how the anniversary was marked there.

Anna's report from Afghanistan

"Today is September 11 2002. It's just another day here in Kabul. We drove through the city this afternoon and it's as busy as ever.

"There are cars everywhere. All the drivers think they're Michael Schumacher, although they've probably never heard of him!

"You wouldn't know from the activity that it is the anniversary of the single most important event in recent history - or indeed that last week a bomb killed over 20 people in this city, or that the President of Afghanistan survived an assassination attempt on the same day!
