The Coventry-based Learning and Skills Council has urged people in the area to put aside less-useful resolutions in favour of gaining new skills and knowledge for 2003.

You can do leisure courses as well as academic ones and they don't have to be for a work-based qualification. As there are plenty of colleges around Coventry and Warwickshire, there's no excuse for not joining in!

Executive director of the LSC, Malcolm Gillespie, said: "Why not take the opportunity to learn something new?

"Whether it's a work-based qualification, a night class or some online learning, with such a wide variety of quality courses at colleges, learning venues and training providers thoughout Coventry and Warwickshire, potential learners or returning learners are spoilt for choice."

If you want to get started on learning, the LSC has laid down some top tips to help you get on the right path.

Getting started:
路 Write an action plan - what do you want to achieve now and in the future?

路 Think about why you want to learn something new:

- to improve your job or career prospects
- to increase your salary
- you need a stimulus perhaps due to being at home or being unemployed

路 If you have a career or job in mind, research it thoroughly by using the careers library and the internet, by speaking to employers and looking at job adverts to see what qualifications are required.

Choosing the right course:
Getting to grips with learning
Languages are just some of the courses on offer
路 Find out as much about the course as possible - how is it structured?

How much teaching time will you have?

What tutor support is offered - how often will you see them?

路 How much homework will you be required to do? What will your weekly workload be?

路 How long is the course? How will it be assessed, by coursework or exams?

路 What is the cost of the course? Don't forget to include exam fees, registration and books/special materials.

路 Is the course accredited and will it lead to a nationally recognised qualification?

Think about how you learn best - e.g. traditional teaching methods, (lectures), project based, practical learning by doing rather than academic.

Try and pick a course that will suit your learning style.

路 Check the success rate of the course. How many achieve the qualification? What is the dropout rate?

路 What learning resources are available e.g. access to computers and the internet, is there a comprehensive library?

Available support:
路 Plan how you are going to juggle home, work and family with doing a course - should you study full time, part time or by distance learning (via the Internet or postal response)

路 If you are working, talk to your employer about sponsoring you.

路 Talk to the college or university training provider about any financial support they can offer through access funds for books, travel or childcare.
