Adam Smith's entrepreneur skills have already won him 拢1000 in the first stage of a competition designed to encourage young people to test out their business ideas and think creatively.

BizCom is a regional event, promoted by Coventry University Careers Service. Students from across the West Midlands were asked to submit their ideas and business plans to a panel of judges within each of the ten universities that took part in the event.

The plan is under wraps for safe-keeping
Geography student Adam was chosen as the Coventry University winner and will go
forward to the regional final 19 May 2003 where he will be in with a chance of winning a further 拢4000.

Adam, 21, is currently on his placement year working at South Warwickshire Primary Care Trust. Adam used his knowledge of both geography and the NHS to come up with his winning business idea.

Adam said: "I have to be careful not to give too much away about my idea, the competition is still in the early stages and it wouldn't be difficult for someone to replicate my idea and steal the glory.

Geography + NHS = Lightbulb moment

Basically it involves Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and the NHS. Simply put, a GIS combines layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place.

My placement with the NHS is based on a similar theme and I thought of the idea when I realised that it would work out cheaper for the NHS to contract this work out rather than employ a full time specialist."

The plan is modern - and feasible

Adam Smith - winner of the Coventry University BizCom heat
Adam developed the business idea on his own, but took advice from his friends, family and fianc茅e.

Adam said: "I think the judges liked my idea because it's very modern and in reality it could become a successful business.

I was delighted when I found out I had won because I hadn't spent a great deal of time on my initial proposal.

I've put a lot more effort into the next stage though and have just completed a 4500 word report for the regional final."

"I'd really rather manage the Sky Blues"
He hopes to make this idea a reality, providing he can raise the necessary funds.

Although his dream job would be to become manager of Coventry City Football Club!

"I've supported them all my life and even with the terrible season that has just gone by I would still love to have Macca's job.

I'm actually writing my dissertation based around Coventry City FC and the ways in which the fans create their own community.

An example of this is the recently formed Coventry City Supporters Trust which I believe will be of tremendous good to the future of the club (see Weblinks on the left).

.....Macca - you'd better watch out, Adam is on his way up....
