Bernard Haitink, who turned 90 in March, conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in Beethoven鈥檚 revolutionary Piano Concerto No. 4 and Bruckner鈥檚 Symphony No. 7 鈥� the composer鈥檚 heartfelt tribute to his mentor Wagner.

In a year that marks both his 90th birthday and the 65th anniversary of his conducting debut, Bernard Haitink conducts the first of the Vienna Philharmonic鈥檚 two concerts this season.

Pianist Emanuel Ax is the soloist in Beethoven鈥檚 revolutionary Piano Concerto No. 4 鈥� written by the composer as his own farewell to the performing stage.

A farewell of a different kind runs through Bruckner鈥檚 Symphony No. 7. Completed shortly after Wagner鈥檚 death, the work鈥檚 heartfelt slow movement, with its poignant closing elegy, pays homage to the man and mentor Bruckner described as his 鈥榙early beloved Master鈥�.
