About this event
John Tavener was one of the most popular composers of the last thirty years. His Song for Athene for the funeral service of Diana, Princess of Wales made him a household name but he was already a celebrity in musical circles with work such as The Protecting Veil. The reflective, mystical nature of his compositions drew heavily on literature and its this aspect of his inspiration that's examined in this evening's Proms Plus. Before an audience at the Royal College of Music before tonight's Prom concert Matthew Sweet and his guests, the award-winning poet and librettist Michael Symmons Roberts and musician, priest and broadcaster Richard Coles will be exploring Tavener's relationship to George Herbert , John Donne and William Blake.
Recorded in front of an audience at the Royal College of Music before tonight's Prom concert.
