Concert information

An evening of new music with the 麻豆官网首页入口 SSO, all with Scottish connections鈥

Sally Beamish鈥檚 new piano concerto is inspired by her family and the famous whirlpool at Corryvreckan; here it is premiered by its dedicatee, Martin Roscoe. Helen Grime, meanwhile, finds inspiration in a painting by Joan Eardley while Jay Capperauld鈥檚 贵猫颈苍-础颈迟丑苍别 (a Scots Gaelic phrase that translates as 鈥榮elf-knowledge鈥) explores identity in modern-day Scotland.

The concert ends with the Scottish Premiere of the late Peter Maxwell Davies鈥檚 Ninth Symphony, a single movement work which makes use of an off-stage brass sextet to both ambiguously celebrate and question military music. The Symphony was hailed at its premiere as a 鈥渂rilliantly crafted work鈥 (The Sunday Times) and 鈥渋ndisputably one of Maxwell Davies鈥檚 most engaged orchestral works鈥 (The Guardian). The orchestra鈥檚 new Chief Conductor Thomas Dausgaard conducts.

The concert will be recorded for future broadcast on 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio 3.

(Catterline in Winter, Helen Grime鈥檚 first Eardley Picture, will be performed by the 麻豆官网首页入口 SSO on Thursday 22 September 2016)
