Everyone knows the tale of Felix Mendelssohn鈥檚 trip to the Hebrides, and the sonic enchantment that emerged from that (slightly choppy) boat trip to Fingal鈥檚 Cave. What more can we say? These isles sometimes have that effect on visitors. Jean Sibelius ran into fogbanks as his steamer took him to Britain, and you can hear them swirling around the expansive Finnish landscape of his sunlit Third Symphony. And Magnus Lindberg鈥檚 radiant First Violin Concerto was hailed as an instant classic after its premiere in 2006. Two of the most dynamic young stars in Finnish music 鈥� violinist Tami Pohjola and conductor Taavi Oramo 鈥� bring a special freshness and energy to music filled with sea air and northern light.
