About This Event
Three’s company: Haydn’s piano trios aren’t as well-known as his symphonies, but they’re every bit as imaginative and entertaining. For Trio Gaspard, they’re a source of unending pleasures and surprises, making his spirited G minor Trio a natural way to launch the Proms debut of this multi-award winning ensemble. It’s a lively upbeat to the early Piano Trio in D minor by Proms featured composer Ethel Smyth: composed in 1880 during her studies in Germany, a time when, she said, ‘there was leisure in the world to love and practise art for its own sake’. Ardent, songful and brimming with youthful emotion, it’s an undervalued gem of 19th-century British chamber music.
