About This Event

The CBSO and Music Director Mirga Gra啪inyt臈-Tyla celebrate the centenary of Mieczys艂aw Weinberg the man Shostakovich hailed as 鈥榦ne of the most outstanding composers鈥 of his day 鈥 with a rare performance of his Symphony No. 3, a work that combines folk melodies and dances with confessional urgency.

That intensity is shared by Elgar鈥檚 passionate Cello Concerto, performed here by 2016 麻豆官网首页入口 Young Musician winner Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

The concert opens with Dorothy Howell鈥檚 radiant tone-poem Lamia (first performed, like Elgar鈥檚 concerto, 100 years ago) and also includes The Way to Castle Yonder, a suite from the much-missed Oliver Knussen鈥檚 opera Higglety Pigglety Pop!
