Programme

Concert information

Gripping drama, high adventure, quirky Nordic enchantment: Grieg’s exuberant music for Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt charts the dreams, voyages and mischief of the Norwegian scoundrel.

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú SSO under conductor Thomas Dausgaard (together with soprano Malin Christensson who sings 'Solveig's Song'), explore this enthralling music, from the much-loved ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ to the tender ‘Morning’, by way of selections rarely heard.

Beforehand, world-renowned Scottish percussionist Colin Currie and his ensemble join the orchestra for an exhilarating celebration of rhythm.' Glorious Percussion', here receiving its UK Premiere, is an astonishing concerto for percussion quintet and orchestra by Tatar/Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. Its spectral sounds and scintillating pulses conjure everything from spiritual reflection to raw, unrestrained energy.

The concert will be recorded, for broadcast on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio 3 on Tuesday 17 September 2019 at 7.30pm.
