Adam Delving at Canterbury Cathedral, Kent

Origins of the window | The story of Adam | The style | The technique

Origins of the window

The choir of Canterbury Cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1174 and it was decided to employ a Frenchman, William of Sens, to oversee its rebuilding. As the structure was rebuilt, so it was reglazed. The windows made included 84 figures representing the genealogy of Christ, from Adam to the Virgin鈥檚 husband Joseph, as a way of emphasizing Christ's humanity. The windows were originally situated high up in the clerestory, nearer God's field of vision than the congregation's, but they have since been moved to more visible locations.
