Stopping the rot

In October 2002, Dermot Nesbitt, the then Minister of the Environment for Northern Ireland, was quoted as saying:

"Our archaeological and built heritage is a finite resource which requires effective stewardship so that it may be enjoyed today and passed on in good order for future generations to enjoy. My Planning (Amendment) bill, currently before the Assembly, which contains provisions to extend control over the demolition of buildings to Areas of Townscape Character, will go some way to allay concerns that have arisen recently such as in the case of a former residence of the Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney."

- the poet's former home was demolished in May 2002.
In July 2003, the DoE invoked its powers to secure the future of the Stable Block in , Strabane, which is a listed building. This is the first time these powers have been used in Northern Ireland.

The DoE has served a repairs notice on the owner, who now has to carry out the necessary works to preserve the building. If he doesn't, the DoE has the authority to acquire the building by compulsory means.
