Amidst supporters of women’s rights there were those who chose to sidestep activism and tackle little victories by working from within the existing social framework. Before women could contribute to the workplace it was necessary to counteract a slovenly, careless approach to their education – which favoured a façade of banal etiquette – with a more substantial programme of study. Dorothea Beale, as the most famous Principal of Cheltenham Ladies' College, shaped her pupils to provide an ‘army’ of teachers, doctors, mothers and wives who turned the tide by example and by excellence.
