The Hall

The Hall's floor
The Great Hall - appropriately named.


The Great Hall in St George's Hall is the central masterpiece of the building.

The hall is 169 feet long including recesses at both ends and 74 feet wide including balconies.
The long sides of the hall are divided in 5 bays by columns made of polished porphyry.

The Floor

The Minton floor is made of two sections.
The central sunken section, which is normally covered by a wooden floor for dancing and the outer rim which looks considerably older, as it was unprotected.
There are over 30,000 tiles used in the designs.

The Organ

The bellows for the organ were originally powered by the steam engine in the basement but in 1931 the organ was enlarged to 120 stops (from 100) and converted to electro-pneumatic action.

The original organist was Mr WT Best in 1855.

There are 12 statues around the edge of the hall. They are:

Sir Robert Peel - founder of the modern Conservative party

William Roscoe - Liverpool patron of the arts

Sir William Brown - Liverpool cotton merchant and benefactor of the Free Public Library

Edward Stanley - statesman and scholar

William Ewart Gladstone- four times Prime Minister

Samuel Robert Graves - merchant and ship owner

Edward Whitley - solicitor who held public office in Liverpool

Frederick Stanley - 16th Earl of Derby

Rev.Jonathan Brooks - Senior Rector and Archdeacon

George Stephenson - inventor and pioneer of railways and chief engineer to Liverpool & Manchester railway company

Rev. Hugh McNeile - curate of St Jude鈥檚 and of St Paul鈥檚

Joseph Mayer - antiquary and collector, principal founder of Liverpool Museum
