Morrison School - 1920s

Throughout the 1920s, the Headmistress of the Girls was Miss A.E. Durbin. Mr E. Burke, who was Headmaster from the day the school opened, retired in 1924 and was succeeded by Mr A. Ernest Lloyd.

"The caretaker was Mr Street and we were more afraid of him than the teachers. If by any chance you were late, you had to ring the bell as the gate was closed prompt 9am. The caretaker then proceeded to tell you off and that was before you saw the headmistress."
Edna Wharton started school in 1921
Eleanor on her first day of school
This is Eleanor on her very first day at school in 1923. She left Morrison in 1931 at the age of 13 and went to the Wavertree Institute for two years.
She qualified as a midwife and became a Sister. She is now a Great-grandmother and recently celebrated her Diamond Wedding Anniversary.
"There was about 10 of us who stayed for dinner which had to be eaten in the hall sitting at a desk. The caretaker would provide hot water if we had brought oxo, cocoa or such.
If you were lucky and had a penny you could get a bottle of lemonade, though mostly it was raspberry or cream soda."
