On this day in 1683, the first public museum, the Ashmolean, was opened by Elias Ashmole in Oxford.

Exhibits included stuffed animals and a dodo, back when people hadn't seen a live dodo in decades.

Fire fighters deal with a blaze at the Sea City Museum in central Southampton.

After a wet and windy morning, the sun is forecast to make an appearance this afternoon.

It will remain blustery with gusts of up to 45mph and temperatures peaking at 15C.

The fire at Southampton's SeaCity Museum is now out.

Fire crews are still investigating the cause of the blaze which is thought to have started when a wooden model caught fire shortly before 12:30 BST.

Staff and visitors were evacuated from the attraction which is dedicated to the city's maritime heritage including the story of the Titanic.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service says a wooden model has caught fire at the SeaCity Museum in Southampton.

Crews were called to the attraction at 12:25 BST. The service said the fire is on the first floor of the building.

A cordon remains in place at the entrance.

The £15m museum opened in April 2012 and is dedicated to Southampton's maritime heritage and the Titanic which made its ill-fated voyage from the city in 1912.

The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a £4.9m grant towards the cost of the museum - the rest of the £15m came from the city council.

Firefighters are dealing with a fire at the SeaCity Museum on Southampton.

Class A drugs and a machete were seized by police after 100 officers raided 12 addresses in Reading.

Nine men aged between 18 and 53 were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs on Tuesday, police said.

A large tree, brought down in high winds overnight, is blocking both carriageways of the A339 near Newbury.

It has closed the road at Greenham Common, causing long delays for thousands of motorists during this morning's rush hour.

West Berkshire council said it was working with the Highways Agency to remove the tree.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

A regional food redistribution centre in Didcot has been allocated £35,000 to buy essential equipment to help people throughout the Thames Valley.

The funding has come from UK charity FareShare and will go towards a forklift truck, a new chiller and depot racking to double the storage capacity of the warehouse.

It means it will supply additional food to more than 85 local charities.

Paul Smith, general manager for the south central area, said: "We hope that this new equipment will really make a difference to FareShare’s operations in Didcot, and we look forward to helping them even more throughout the next six years."

Southampton will report Liverpool to the Premier League over an illegal approach for centre-back Virgil van Dijk, reports Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio Solent.

Among the families marking the one-minute silence in Southampton were Emma Sibley, 27, and Karl Hucker, 32, alongside their young daughter.

Ms Sibley said: "We're here just to remember and pay respect to the families and loved ones.
